Former NFL punter Chris Kluwe arrested for anti-Trump stunt
Chris Kluwe, a former NFL punter for the Minnesota Vikings, was dragged out of a city council meeting in handcuffs over an anti-Trump stunt.
The Huntington Beach, California resident compared the MAGA movement to Nazism in a public rant before approaching council members as police swarmed him.
Kluwe attended the council meeting Tuesday to protest a new pro-Trump plaque commemorating the 50th anniversary of a public library.
The design features the acronym MAGA, with the words, "Magical," "Alluring," "Galvanizing" and "Adventurous."
Ex-NFL punter attacks Trump
The city of Huntington Beach has become known as a pro-Trump enclave in California. Kluwe, a resident of the town, showed up to Tuesday's meeting to share a tirade against the president.
"MAGA stands for trying to erase trans people from existence. MAGA stands for resegregation and racism. MAGA stands for censorship and book bans. MAGA stands for firing air traffic controllers while planes are crashing," Kluwe said. "MAGA stands for firing the people overseeing our nuclear arsenal. MAGA stands for firing military veterans and those serving them at the VA, including canceling research on veteran suicide. MAGA stands for cutting funds to education, including for disabled children."
"MAGA is profoundly corrupt, unmistakably antidemocracy, and most importantly, MAGA is explicitly a Nazi movement. You may have replaced a swastika with a red hat, but that is what it is."
Kluwe concluded by declaring he would engage in an act of "peaceful" disobedience - but the scene turned chaotic as he approached the council members.
Police quickly apprehended Kluwe, who was charged with disrupting an assembly. He spent four hours in jail.
"I want our Democratic officials to start getting arrested," Kluwe said. "I want them to start actually protesting what is going on because what is going on is not American."
Grab for attention
City council member Gracey Van Der Mark said she was afraid watching Kluwe walk towards the dais.
“He wanted his five minutes of fame, and that’s what he got,” Van Der Mark said.
“It is OK for us to have our beautiful conservative city,” she said. “We respect everyone. We’re not out there attacking people who don’t think like us, we’re not out there running across and trying to intimidate people who don’t agree with us ... The city of Huntington Beach has always been conservative, and they tried to change that, and we’re just taking it back to the way it was. If I wanted to live in a liberal city with liberal values, I would have stayed in Los Angeles.”
Despite the disruption, Huntington Beach voted unanimously to approve the MAGA sign, which also includes this slogan: "Through hope and change our nation has built back better to the golden era of Making America Great Again!"
Kluwe has been retired from football for more than a decade. He played eight seasons with the Minnesota Vikings, becoming known off the field for his vocal support of gay marriage.
The former punter blamed his political views for his being released from the Vikings after the 2012 season.
