Former National Security Advisor John Bolton did not have the best day of his life, as he now faces a world of legal troubles.

According to Fox News, the former NSA was indicted by a federal grand jury today and now faces 18 counts "related to the improper handling of classified materials."

Specifically, he was hit with "eight counts of transmission of National Defense Information and ten counts of retention of National Defense information."

Prosecutors say that the documents he transmitted were sent to two individuals who were not authorized to view such documents.

What's happening?

The indictment looks bad for Bolton, as it outlines very specific details regarding his mishandling of classified documents.

"From on or about April 9, 2018, through at least on or about August 22, 2025, BOLTON abused his position as National Security Advisor by sharing more than a thousand pages of information about his day-to-day activities as the National Security Advisor—including information relating to the national defense which was classified up to the TOP SECRET/SCI level—with two unauthorized individuals, namely Individuals 1 and 2," the indictment reads.

It added, "BOLTON also unlawfully retained documents, writings, and notes relating to the national defense, including information classified up to the TOP SECRET/SCI level, in his home in Montgomery County, Maryland."

The indictment explained that the documents he transmitted "revealed intelligence about future attacks by an adversarial group in another country; a liaison partner sharing sensitive information with the U.S. intelligence community," among many other things.

The documents he allegedly transmitted were all marked "TOP SECRET."

Social media reacts

Users across social media had plenty to say about Bolton being indicted, and definitely over the specific charges for which he now faces potential legal consequences.

"The guy who called Trump a 'national security risk' just sent classified docs over AOL. You can’t make this up," one X user wrote.

Another X user wrote, "I recall there was another person...hmmm can't remember who...something about mishandling classified documents...unsecured...next to a corvette.... forgive me. I have a terrible memory, well meaning but, you know."

It'll be interesting to see if prosecutors can bring Bolton down.
