A longtime leader

"Aristy Castro, 73, was born in the community of El Bonao, Higüey, La Altagracia province, on May 10, 1949. He had been president of the Liberal Reform Party (PRL) since 2015," Dominican News reported.

"He began his political career in the Social Christian Reform Party (PRSC), which he joined in 1976 and for which he was elected twice as a representative and seven times as a senator," it continued.

"He also presented his presidential candidacy for this political party in 2008. He was president of the Senate four times and held the position of general secretary of the Municipal League (LMD) on three occasions," the outlet added.

A life of impact

Dominican President Luis Abinader released a statement in tribute to the loss of the leader.

"Our friend Amable Aristy Castro passed away. Close and supportive politician, friend of his friends and with deep love for his people. My deepest condolences to his now widow D. Andrea and her children Karina, Yenny, Onabel and Amable," the English translation stated.

Castro had also recently celebrated his wife's birthday just days before his sudden passing.

"Today is my beloved wife Andrea's birthday, the woman of my life, my support, my column. Life gave me the best wife I could have imagined. Therefore, on your day, I am here to offer you the promise of eternal love. Have a nice and happy birthday, like your heart!" he wrote on Nov. 30.

His loss leaves behind a long legacy in the nation and will be deeply mourned by the people of the Dominican Republic.
