A former Trump administration official was left in critical condition this week after he was shot during an attempted carjacking.

According to The Hill, Mike Gill was employed by the U.S. Commodity Futures Trading Commission under former President Donald Trump.

Carnage began early on Monday night

Family spokesperson Erica Richardson explained that the father of three was inside his car at the 900 block of Washington, D.C.'s K Street NW early on Monday evening.

D.C. Metropolitan Police Department (MPD) stated that a male suspect approached the vehicle at around 6:00 p.m. and opened fire after forcing his way into the vehicle.

The same suspect is then believed to have unsuccessfully attempted to carjack another person an hour later at the intersection of Fifth and K Streets NW

While that attack ended without bloodshed, the suspect is accused of going on to target a third car in Northeast D.C. and fatally shooting the driver.

Suspect killed in shootout with police

The suspect is then reported to have absconded with the car and fled to Maryland’s Prince George’s County where he later shot at a police cruiser at around 3:00 a.m.

He was finally confronted by officers with Maryland's New Carrollton Police Department, who opened fire after he produced two handguns. The suspect was taken to hospital and later died of his injuries.

ABC 7 reported that Metropolitan Police Department (MPD) Executive Assistant Chief Jeffery Carroll addressed the violence at a press conference on Tuesday.

"We do believe that the individual that was involved in the incident in Prince George's County is the suspect that committed the assault and attempt to kill here in the District of Columbia in the 900 block of K Street, the attempted carjacking in the 1000 block of 3rd Street NE and the homicide that occurred in the area of 3rd Street and N Street NE," Carroll said.

Mayor calls attacks "senseless and tragic"

ABC 7 noted that D.C. Mayor Muriel Bowser issued a statement condemning the crimes as "senseless and tragic," adding, "We know that two families are experiencing an unthinkable tragedy."

Meanwhile, Mike Gill's family put out a statement of their own in which they hailed him as "an amazing husband, father, friend and colleague."

"He makes friends with everyone - and is always looking for opportunities to bring people together and make them feel included and loved," the statement stressed.

" A free people [claim] their rights, as derived from the laws of nature."
