Gabbard is struggling to get Senate support: report
It would appear that Tulsi Gabbard is struggling to get the support she needs from the U.S. Senate.
This is according to a new report from The Hill.
Gabbard is a former Democrat who spent time in Congress. She has since, though, left the Democrats and has teamed up with President-Elect Donald Trump. She helped to achieve victory in the 2024 presidential election.
Trump has returned the favor by nominating her to be the next director of national intelligence, but it appears that some members of the Senate are trying to block her.
Here is the latest from The Hill
Gabbard has recently begun meeting with members of the U.S. Senate, who will decide whether to approve or reject her for the national intelligence position. It would appear that things are not going well.
The Hill reports:
Nearly a half dozen sources, including senators and individuals close to the situation, indicated that Gabbard is having trouble during meetings with lawmakers, with one source familiar describing the sit-downs as “not going well.”
Importantly, it does appear that some Republican senators might be against her.
The outlet writes:
Two Senate Republicans also echoed the concerns, with one noting that multiple members who have sat down with the former Democratic Hawaii congresswoman have come away unimpressed thus far.
The big question, of course, is what the problem is.
Here is what we know:
According to The Hill, their sources have pointed to two things.
"The objections lawmakers have stem from Gabbard’s lack of experience and her relationships with U.S. adversaries," the outlet reports.
It continues:
She met in 2017 with Syria’s Bashar Assad, whose government was overthrown this week, following allegations of chemical weapons use against his own people. She has also been a high-profile defender of leaker Edward Snowden and has echoed Russian President Vladimir Putin’s talking points on the Ukraine war. Her defense of Putin would make it difficult for her to gain support from the likes of outgoing Senate GOP Leader Mitch McConnell (R-Ky.), who is staunch in his support for Ukraine.
Gabbard and her supporters say that this is merely a smear. But, we will have to see how this all plays out in the coming weeks.
Thus far, it would appear that President-Elect Trump is standing behind his nomination of Gabbard, as he has stood behind all of his picks so far, no matter what the political left has thrown at them.
