U.S. Attorney General Merrick Garland has appointed a special counsel to investigate Hunter Biden, Fox News reports. 

If the move, however, was designed to combat notions of bias within the Department of Justice (DOJ), it has failed.

This is because the man whom Garland has appointed to lead the investigation is none other than U.S. Attorney David Weiss.

Weiss, of course, is the same man who oversaw the charges that were brought against Hutner Biden in Delaware - the same charges that led to the "sweetheart" plea deal, in which Weiss appeared to try to help Hunter Biden to avoid jail time.

Garland's announcement

Garland announced his appointment of Weiss as special counsel on Friday.

"I'm here today to announce the appointment of David Weiss as a special counsel consistent with the Department of Justice regulations governing such matters," he said. "In keeping with those regulations, I have today notified the designated members of each House of Congress of the appointment."

Garland went on to reveal that Weiss, earlier in the week, had informed him that, "in his judgment, his investigation has reached a stage at which he should continue his work as a special counsel."

Accordingly, Weiss asked Garland to make him a special counsel. And, Garland, apparently, has now done just this.

Garland said that "upon considering his request, as well as the extraordinary circumstances relating to this matter, I have concluded it is in the public interest to appoint him as special counsel."

It "doesn't pass the smell test"

U.S. Sen. Lindsey Graham (R-SC) is among those who have immediately condemned the move to make Weiss special counsel.

"This doesn't pass the smell test," Graham said, later adding, "to think that the very guy who wrote the plea agreement is seriously going to continue to investigate the Bidens is laughable."

Former President Donald Trump also released a statement condemning the appointment of Weiss by Garland.

Trump wrote:

David Weiss was picked by the two Democrat Senators from Delaware under “Blue Slip.” He would not have been picked by me. But I have a great idea. Why don’t they use Deranged Jack Smith. Weiss has been investigating Hunter for 4 years, giving him the “sweetheart” deal of all sweetheart deals. But a brilliant Judge in Delaware saw through it all. Now, I read, the Department of Injustice wants a new Judge and Jurisdiction. But so do I, with far stronger reasons than Hunter & Crooked Joe. MAGA!!!

To further put this situation into perspective, even CNN's Jake Tapper said that some of the concerns about Weiss's appointment "have merit." Tapper's willingness to say this much is conclusive proof that this situation just is not right.
