Investigators have finally revealed how actor Gene Hackman and his wife, Betsy Arakawa, died.

It turns out that Arakawa died from hantavirus pulmonary syndrome, while Hackman died from severe heart disease.

This information, according to The Hill, was revealed by authorities on Friday.

It appears that it was a very tragic end for Hackman.

The details

Investigators have revealed that Hackman, who also had Alzheimer's, was predeceased by his wife. In fact, it appears that he likely lived with the body of his dead wife for about a week before he himself died.

The New York Post reports:

Gene Hackman lived with his dead wife’s body for a full week before succumbing to complications from heart problems and advanced Alzheimer’s disease, officials said Friday as they revealed heartbreaking details of the legendary actor’s death.

The Post goes on to reveal what investigators believe happened to Arakawa.

Per the outlet:

Arakawa, 65, last left the sprawling estate on Feb. 11, which was also the last time she sent out any communications, according to Santa Fe County Sheriff Adan Mendoza. She likely died of the virus that day, New Mexico Chief Medical Examiner Heather Jarrell said at a highly anticipated news conference Friday afternoon.

For those unfamiliar with the Hantavirus, the CDC explains, "People get hantavirus from contact with rodents like rats and mice, especially when exposed to their urine, droppings, and saliva. It can also spread through a bite or scratch by a rodent, but this is rare."

Hackman "in a very poor state of health"

It would be another seven days before Hackman would die, investigators believe.

The Post reports:

Hackman, 95, who had late-stage Alzheimer’s disease likely died roughly a week after his wife from hypertensive and atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease and from Alzheimer’s, Jarrell said. He tested negative for Hantavirus.

He was described by investigators to be "in a very poor state of health." They added that "it was quite possible he did not know" that his wife was deceased, given the fact that he was in "an advanced state of Alzheimer's disease."

Investigators believe that this is when Hackman died because it was the last day that any activity was detected on his pacemaker. Medical examiners found that, while he was not dehydrated at the time of his death, he did not have any food in his stomach.

All in all, it appears that this was a very tragic end to these individuals' lives.
