Rep. George Santos (R-NY), accused of fabricating his life before politics, is now apparently on an apology tour on the leftwing media circuit.

According to the Washington Examiner, Santos, during a recent CNN interview, explained why he made the fabricated claims while also stating that Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-NY) was his inspiration in deciding to enter politics.

Santos not only allegedly told many lies, he's also facing a mountain of charges -- 23 to be exact -- "over accusations he inflated his campaign finance reports and charged donors’ credit cards without authorization," The Hill reported last month.

Santos was originally indicted on 10 counts in May, and pleaded not guilty at the time.

AOC inspiration

Santos gave a weird interview in which he distanced himself from the Republican Party and claimed AOC inspired him to jump into politics.

"I was always in some way disconnected from the GOP because I've only been doing politics for four years. I came out of nowhere," Santos said.

"And said, 'I want to do this, AOC can do it.' AOC was my inspiration! Most people don't know that. You know, I felt like she's — I always felt like you needed to be a Kennedy, a Bush, or a Clinton to be in politics. And Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez is there, and I'm like, look — she's a scrappy girl.

He added, "She's from where I'm from! I'm like, let's do this. I think if she proved that everybody can do this. No matter right or left."

Social media reacted fiercely to the interview.

Reactions

Not only was Santos slammed across social media for the weird interview, but CNN was as well. Many questioned why the network would give him airtime, given the seriousness of the charges he faces.

"The fact they still interview him is disgusting and disrespectful to everyone," one X user wrote.

Another X user wrote, "Platforming a felon and letting him lie. THIS IS CNN."

Santos has faced increased pressure from all sides of the political aisle to resign amid his ongoing legal woes. So far, he has not signaled that he's willing to do so.
