GOP congressman files for divorce following alleged affair with fellow lawmaker
The Daily Mail reported that Georgia Republican Rep. Rich McCormick filed for divorce earlier this month following an alleged affair with another lawmaker.
The 55-year-old McCormick has been married to Dr. Debra Miller for the past seven years and has seven children with her.
Lawmakers seen holding hands
Miller reportedly told the Daily Mail in text exchange that she does not expect her husband to "be forthcoming" about the reason for their divorce.
She added that the newspaper "should ask Rich and his colleague" for more details, with the colleague in question being 53-year-old Texas Republican Rep. Beth Van Duyne.
The Daily Mail quoted one unnamed GOP lawmaker as saying that McCormick and Van Duyne were observed "holding hands under the table" at a Republican Study Committee lunch.
That same individual allegedly saw McCormick grab Van Duyne by "the small of her back" on the House floor. Meanwhile, two other sources claimed to have seen the pair holding hands after House votes.
Congressman's wife absent from Mother's Day post
The newspaper also cited reports that McCormick and Van Duyne "could be seen sitting and laughing together" as President Joe Biden delivered his State of the Union address.
The Daily Mail further pointed out that while McCormick released a photograph featuring his wife at Christmas, she was absent from a Mother's Day social media post.
Happy Mother's Day to all the incredible moms out there! Today, I want to give a special shoutout to my own mom. As a single mother, she showed me the true meaning of hard work and determination.
She taught me to never settle for mediocrity and to always strive for greatness.… pic.twitter.com/CMopcxlevM

A spokesperson for McCormick told the Daily Mail that "Congressman McCormick and Dr. Miller have been separated for quite some time."
"He has kept that private and will continue to keep his personal life out of the media spotlight," the spokesperson went on to add.
Previous House romances have ended in marriage
However, the newspaper noted in an article published on Monday that other members of Congress have formed romantic relationships over the years, and not all of them have been tainted with scandal.
One example came in 1994, when New York Republican Rep. Bill Paxon proposed to fellow Empire State GOP member Susan Molinari on the House floor.
In another instance, former Maine Republican Sen. Olympia Snowe and Maine Republican Gov. John McKernan married in 1989. The two had previously dated while both were serving in the House of Representatives.
