Secret Service Director Kimberly Cheatle resigned on Tuesday after lawmakers grilled her over security lapses at the rally where former President Donald Trump was nearly assassinated.

However, Cheatle's time in the spotlight may not be over, as one congresswoman is looking to pursue perjury charges against her.

"Secret Service was made aware of a threat"

According to Breitbart, that idea was put forward by Florida Republican Rep. Anna Paulina Luna as Cheatle was testifying before the House Oversight Committee on Monday.

"You were asked earlier…about whether or not Secret Service was aware of a threat," Breitbart quoted Luna as saying to the bureaucrat.

"You had said, 'No, they were unaware of a threat,' and, yet, according to communications…from law enforcement that were in some of these group chats, they actually had reported that Secret Service was made aware of a threat at around 5:59 p.m.," she continued.

Luna accuses Cheatle of lying under oath

When Cheatle said, "I think we’re conflating the difference between the term 'threat' and 'suspicious,'" Luna replied with, "But you guys did have knowledge at 5:59 p.m., according to those group chats, did you not?"

The then-Secret Service director stressed that the group chats referenced "a suspicious individual," Luna called for Cheatle to be prosecuted.

"Chairman, in my opinion, according to some of the testimony today, I feel that [Cheatle] has perjured [herself] in some instances, and, so, I'm going to ask for a full review of the transcripts by staff, and if you find that to be the case, I do ask that you bring perjury charges against the director," Luna told Kentucky Republican Rep. James Comer.

"It is very frustrating — and I have talked to my colleagues, and we have said it to your face — that you have been up here basically stonewalling our ability to get the answers to the American people," Luna went on to add.

Oversight Committee chairman: "Cheatle instilled no confidence"

Meanwhile, Breitbart noted that Comer released a statement following Cheatle's testimony in which he excoriated her performance.

"At yesterday’s Oversight Committee hearing, Director Cheatle instilled no confidence that she has the ability to ensure the Secret Service can meet its protective mission," the congressman complained.

He pointed to "egregious security failures" which "resulted in the assassination attempt of President Trump, the murder of an innocent victim, and harm to others in the crowd."

"While Director Cheatle’s resignation is a step toward accountability, we need a full review of how these security failures happened so that we can prevent them going forward," he insisted.
