Trump critic Chip Roy to leave Congress, run for Texas AG
Texas Republican Rep. Chip Roy has a history of clashing with President Donald Trump, such as when he called the president's Big Beautiful Bill as "garbage."
However, Roy's fights with Trump are coming to an end as the lawmaker revealed this week that he is leaving Congress.
Roy to seek Texas AG role
According to the Daily Mail, Roy announced in a social media post on Thursday that he will not seek another term on Capitol Hill and instead run to become Texas attorney general.
Texas has a long and proud tradition of rising to defend our homes, our freedom, and our communities.
I’m running for Attorney General to carry on that legacy… unafraid to fight, unafraid to win, and unafraid to defend Texas at every turn. #LiveFree pic.twitter.com/eqQNwx0XHm

Roy declared that his home state "has a long and proud tradition of rising to defend our homes, our freedom, and our communities."
"I'm running for Attorney General to carry on that legacy… unafraid to fight, unafraid to win, and unafraid to defend Texas at every turn," the lawmaker added.
Current Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton has already signaled his attention to primary longtime Texas Republican Sen. John Cornyn.
Trump wanted Roy primiaried
The Daily Mail recalled how Roy backed Florida Republican Gov. Ron Desantis' run against Trump for the Republican Party's presidential nomination in the last cycle.
For his part, Trump condemned Roy in December of last year and suggested that the congressman should face a primary challenge.
"The very unpopular 'Congressman' from Texas, Chip Roy, is getting in the way, as usual, of having yet another Great Republican Victory," The Hill quoted Trump as writing on Truth Social.
"All for the sake of some cheap publicity for himself. Republican obstructionists have to be done away with," the president insisted.
Lee endorses Roy
Roy's departure was lamented by Utah Republican Sen. Mike Lee, who wrote in a social media post that "[t]here’s no more fearless and respected conservative in Congress than [Rep. Chip Roy]."
Nevertheless, Lee endorsed Roy's decision to run for Texas attorney general, adding, "Chip has delivered for Trump in Congress. He'll do the same thing for Texans as AG."
Tennessee Republican Rep. Tim Burchett spoke up as well, stating, "I hate to lose my friend [Rep. Chip Roy] in Congress. Sometimes I want to pinch his ears off but I will miss him."
