Former Utah Republican Rep. Mia Love made history just over a decade ago when she became her party's first African American congresswoman.

However, her former colleagues were left in mourning this past weekend after it was revealed that Love had died at the age of 49.

Love "passed away peacefully" at home

According to Salt Lake City's ABC 4, a statement put up on the former lawmaker's X account revealed that she had passed away "in her home surrounded by family."

"Love Family: With grateful hearts filled to overflowing for the profound influence of Mia on our lives, we want you to know that she passed away peacefully today," the statement read.

"In the midst of a celebration of her life and an avalanche of happy memories, Mia quietly slipped the bands of mortality and, as her words and vision always did, soared heavenward," the statement stressed.

"We are thankful for the many good wishes, prayers and condolences," it continued before adding, "We are taking some time as a family and will provide information about funeral services and a public celebration of her life in the days to come."

Love remembered for being "a fearless leader"

ABC 4 noted that Mia had been struggling with brain cancer, with her family explaining earlier this year that the former congresswoman's condition had taken a turn for the worse.

Her passing was met with tributes on social media, including from Utah Republican Gov. Spencer Cox, who said she was a "trailblazer and visionary leader."

Cox hailed Love for having "inspired countless Utahns through her courage, grace, and unwavering belief in the American dream."

Utah Republican Lt. Gov. Deidre Henderson spoke up as well, describing Love as "a fearless leader, a history-maker, and a woman of deep conviction."

From city council to the House of Representatives

ABC 4 recalled how Mia's career in Washington began in 2014 when she defeated incumbent Democratic Rep. Jim Matheson and went on to serve two terms in Congress.

Prior to that, she served as a member of city council in Saratoga Springs, Utah before successfully running for mayor of the community.

"If anyone would have guessed ten, twenty years ago where the first black Republican would come from, I think Utah would have been at the bottom of the list," ABC 4 quoted her as saying in 2023.
