Grassley releases FBI whistleblower records showing anti-Trump agent behind Jack Smith case
On Thursday, Chuck Grassley, the chairman of the Senate Judiciary Committee, made public a collection of whistleblower documents.
The documents are reportedly firm demonstrations that a former FBI agent who was known for being anti-Donald Trump played a significant part in Jack Smith's case regarding intervention in the 2020 election, as Fox News reported.
Grassley and Ron Johnson, the chairman of the Permanent Subcommittee on Investigations, stated that Timothy Thibault, a former FBI agent who was fired in 2024 for violating the Hatch Act, sent an email that should have sent up alarm bells.
The email was to a subordinate that contained the language for what eventually became Smith's false elector case.
Start of the Investigation
They claimed that this information was revealed in internal emails and records.
On April 13, 2022, the FBI officially began its investigation of Trump, which was referred to as "Arctic Frost" within the agency.
According to Fox News, Thibault is also accused of taking inappropriate action to launch the investigation into Trump's involvement in the 2020 election meddling case, as he did not have the authority to open investigations in his position.
On Thursday, during the confirmation hearing for Kash Patel, who was nominated by President Donald Trump to be the FBI Director, Grassley brought up the whistleblower disclosures and stressed that the American people do not trust the bureau.
From Grassley
"Mr. Patel, in my time, I’ve never seen our law enforcement and intelligence community institutions so badly infected with political decision-making," Grassley said in his opening statements.
According to the lawmaker, the evidence that he brought before the committee, showed that in conducting themselves in such a way, the agents have "broken faith with We the People.
"Partisan FBI agents and DOJ officials tried – and ultimately succeeded – in launching a full-field criminal investigation and prosecution of the President of the United States," he continued.
"Justice Department and FBI leadership acted in concert to further a political scheme to take down Trump ... They have yet to learn their lesson ... As I’ve said before, if a politically-charged investigation is to be opened, it must be done the right way. That didn’t happen here."
Previous Attempts
The investigation's foundational paper, according to whistleblowers who testified before Grassley, relied on data collected by the "liberal nonprofit American Oversight."
The investigator's opening note sent to their higher-ups in the DOJ were sent for approval. However, the whistleblowers asserted that the investigators, "removed or watered-down material connected to the aforementioned left-wing entities that existed in previous versions and recommended that a full investigation — not a preliminary investigation — be approved."
