Growing number of migrants coming through Mexico turning around after Trump victory: Report

The Donald Trump effect is very real, and it's already happening weeks before he's set to formally take office.

President-elect Trump has vowed to undo the damage done by the Biden-Harris administration at the border, involving bold initiatives like mass deportations and effectively shutting down the border.

Apparently, word has already begun to spread among the migrants considering coming to the United States through Mexico, as, according to Fox News, many of them are turning around and going home.

That's because, unlike the Biden-Harris administration, Trump takes the border crisis and immigration extremely seriously, and going by his previous track record, they know he means business.

What's happening?

As Jan. 20, 2025 inches closer, Mexican officials reported that a growing number of migrants who are anticipating Trump's hardline border policies are requesting to be returned home.

Fox News reported:

Mexican officials say between 50 and 100 migrants are now requesting "voluntary return" to their own countries, with migrants either covering their own costs or relying on state funds. Some migrants credit their apprehension to Trump's plans to eliminate a U.S. government app used to claim asylum with border agents.

The controversial asylum app created by the Biden-Harris administration allows migrants to schedule border crossings. Trump and his incoming officials who will oversee the border have vowed to immediately end that program.

Trump has also vowed to reinstate the "Remain in Mexico" policy that was effective in helping mitigate border crossings during his first term in the White House.

Migrants who are currently awaiting their border crossing asylum date are becoming worried that if they don't receive it before Jan. 20, they will be stuck, which is why many are turning around and heading home, presumably to avoid the hassle, danger and confusion.

Waiting in Mexico, for most migrants, is extremely dangerous, as they face uncertain violence from the country's armies of drug cartels.

News of migrants turning around didn't come as a surprise to many of Trump's supporters.

"They don’t want to pay thousands of dollars to the cartels just to get deported later," one X user wrote.
