Harris campaign paid Oprah's company $2.5 million for celebrity town hall event and endorsements
Vice President Kamala Harris' losing campaign reportedly raised and spent more than $1.5 billion in about three months, and people are now asking where all of that money solicited from Democratic donors went.
Recent reports indicate that around $2.5 million of the funds raised went to Oprah Winfrey's production company for a live-streamed town hall event in Michigan in mid-September in support of Harris, according to the Independent.
That is far more than the initial reports of $1 million spent on the Winfrey-hosted town hall but pales in comparison to the several million dollars spent collectively on celebrity appearances and endorsements, the tens of millions spent on consultants and strategists, and the hundreds of millions spent on campaign ads.
Did Oprah get paid $1 million for the Harris town hall?
Just a few days after the election, the Washington Examiner reported that Federal Election Commission filings showed that the Harris campaign had paid Harpo Productions, Oprah Winfrey's company, for the mid-September town hall event that featured several other celebrity appearances and Winfrey's endorsement of VP Harris to be the next president.
That report soon led to claims that Winfrey herself had been paid $1 million for her endorsements, but the icon of daytime talk TV was adamant that she "was paid nothing, ever," when asked by a TMZ reporter.
Winfrey later explained in a social media post, "I was not paid a dime. For the livestreaming event in September, my production company, Harpo, was asked to bring in set design, lights, cameras, crew, producers and every other item necessary (including the benches and the chairs we sat on) to put on a live production."
"I did not take any personal fee," she added. "However, the people who worked on that production needed to be paid. And were. End of story."
That was reiterated by a spokesperson for Harpo who told Variety, "The campaign paid for the production costs of 'Unite for America,' a live-streaming event that took place Sept. 19 outside Detroit, Mich.," and added, "Oprah Winfrey was at no point during the campaign paid a personal fee, nor did she receive a fee from Harpo."
Oprah town hall cost the campaign around $2.5 million
Had everything been left at that, perhaps it would have been the "end of story," as Winfrey said, but it has since been revealed that the Harris campaign spent more than twice as much on the Winfrey-hosted town hall event than had been initially reported.
According to The New York Times, the Harris campaign actually paid Harpo Productions closer to $2.5 million for the town hall event filled with celebrity appearances and endorsements.
All told, the campaign dropped more than $10 million combined to secure the appearances, endorsements, and performances of several prominent celebrities and music stars at Harris rallies in the run-up to Election Day.
Yet, it would appear that buying the support of big celebrities doesn't have much return on investment, as a plurality of American voters ignored the pleas of those TV, movie, and music stars and instead voted decisively for former President Trump.
Raised more than $1.5 billion but now reportedly in debt
Per The Times, the Harris campaign raised and spent more than $1.5 billion in 15 weeks, which averages out to more than $100 million in expenditures per week, nearly a majority of which went toward ad campaigns in the battleground states and the agencies and consultants who created those ads that blanketed the airwaves.
However, despite massively outspending the Trump campaign, Harris still lost, and on top of that, her campaign ended not just in disgrace but also in debt, perhaps as much as $20 million, which the Democratic Party now fears it will be saddled with as the next election cycle immediately begins.
