Prince Harry said to be 'depressed and embarassed' and 'heartbroken' over scandal surrounding his Sentebale charity in Africa
British Royal Prince Harry has found himself embroiled in an international scandal involving one of his charitable organizations, and the developing situation is said to be having a deleterious effect on his mental health and well-being.
The Duke of Sussex is reportedly "deeply depressed and embarrassed" by the negative media coverage regarding the Sentebale charity he established in Africa decades ago, which he feels has been "ripped away" from him, according to the New York Post.
Harry co-founded the African charity in 2006 alongside Prince Seeiso of Lesotho in honor of his late mother, Princess Diana, but both founders recently resigned along with the organization's board of trustees amid a worsening and accusatory dispute with the board's chair, Dr. Sophie Chandauka.
Source says Harry is "depressed and embarrassed"
NewsNation reported that an unnamed source close to Prince Harry revealed that he is "deeply depressed and embarrassed" by the Sentebale scandal and believes the charitable organization was "ripped away" from him by Dr. Chandauka.
"He loves his charities -- this is what he wants to spend his life doing, and now, one of them is gone … and in the most horrible way," the source said.
Sentebale was initially created to help young Africans dealing with HIV/AIDS, but recently shifted and broadened its focus to "empower" African youth, which has not sat well with the Zimbabwean Board of Trustees Chairwoman, Chandauka.
A fierce dispute arose over the charity's direction, which prompted the resignations in protest of the group's trustees, who were joined in solidarity by the two co-founders, Harry and Seeiso.
That dispute has gotten ugly with accusations flying back and forth of alleged corruption by Chandauka and allegations of "bullying and harassment" by the British Royal, among other claims that compelled an investigation by the U.K.'s Charity Commission, per the Post.
Did the scandal originate with Meghan Markle?
One rumored cause of the dispute is lingering hard feelings by Chandauka about Harry's reaction to her claims about an alleged negative interaction with the Duchess of Sussex, Meghan Markle, at a polo event benefiting Sentebale in 2024.
According to The Telegraph, Chandauka complained that Markle showed up unannounced and imposed herself in the chairwoman's place during the trophy presentation, to which Harry sent an "unpleasant and imperious message" in response.
In her formal complaint filed with the Charity Commission, Chandauka accused Harry of "harassment and bullying" against her, among other things.
Friend says Harry is "heartbroken and flabbergasted" by the Sentebale scandal
According to NewsNation, a former classmate and close friend of Prince Harry, Alex Raynor, explained in a recent interview that Harry was "heartbroken and flabbergasted" by how Sentebale "has been taken hostage by the chair," Chandauka, whom he alleged "had her nose put out of joint because she was not the most important woman of color on the stage" at the 2024 polo event.
"He is so upset and hurt and wounded about the things that are being said about him," Rayner continued of his friend. "I think it’s too early to tell whether he will just walk away now or whether he might try and get it back."
"The way he feels is as if he has had one of his fingers cut off. He set up Sentebale with a school friend when the death of his mum was a fresh memory," the friend added of Harry. "At the moment, he is just in total shock about what is being said and the accusations being made."
