A high school hockey player as died at the age of 17.

Fox News reports that the incident took place in New York over the weekend.

The report indicates that the 17-year-old boy, Connor Kasin, suffered a medical emergency and that emergency personnel were unable to save him.

Many question, though - at the time of this writing - remain unanswered.

Here is what we know so far:

The incident took place at about 9 p.m. on Saturday night - Nov. 30, 2024 - at the Town of Oyster Bay Ice Skating Center in Bethpage. There a varsity ice hockey game was played by Kasin's Massapequa High School team - called Sharks Elite Youth Hockey.

It was during the game's intermission that the incident occurred. Kasin, according to reports, collapsed to the ice during a skate around. In response, "civilians" rushed to the ice a began performing CPR until emergency responders arrived.

A local news outlet reported:

Nassau police said in a release that "medics and officers responded to the Town of Oyster Bay Skating Center . . . for a 17-year-old male who had lost consciousness on the ice during an intermission of a hockey game. It said that "civilians" began CPR until an ambulance and police arrived.

After the emergency personnel arrived, Kasin was placed into an ambulance and rushed to a local hospital. It was, however, too late.

At the hospital, he was pronounced dead.

Investigation is underway

At the time of this writing, all that is known is that a medical emergency occurred and Kasin died. We do not know what the medical emergency was or what could have caused it.

The incident is currently under investigation by local police. The police have released a statement saying that there was "no criminality suspected." But, other than that, not much information has been released.

Kasin's high school - Massapequa High School - has sent a letter around to students and their families about the situation. In the letter, school officials, in part, wrote:

It is heartbreaking to report that Connor did not survive. His passing is devastating to the Massapequa community, and we offer our deepest condolences to Connor's family and friends

The local community, according to reports, has come together to mourn Kasin's untimely passing.

The outlet reports, "The Massapequa varsity hockey coaches told News 12 in a statement that Connor was one of the most hardworking and spirited players on and off the ice." Kasin's classmates similarly described him as "a good guy."
