President Donald Trump announced this week that he is taking over the Metropolitan Police Department and deploying National Guard troops after noting how Washington, D.C.'s homicide rate is higher than most other world capitals.

While prominent Democrats like former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton condemned the move, they were quickly met with humiliating scorn.

Deputy press secretary calls Clinton "a massive liar"

According to Fox News, Clinton responded to Trump's announcement with a social media post that read, "As you listen to an unhinged Trump try to justify deploying the National Guard in DC, here's reality: Violent crime in DC is at a 30-year low."

Fox News noted how White House deputy press secretary Abigail Jackson pushed back with a post of her own, stating, "On top of being a big-time loser, you're also a massive liar."

She then referenced a report published by NBC 4 Washington last month on the suspension of a Metropolitan Police Department commander.

The report explained that Michael Pulliam was put on administrative leave following accusations that crime statistics were being manipulated.

GOP official asks why "Democrats always take up for thugs"

Clinton was not alone in attacking Trump, as House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries did so as well, writing, "Violent crime in Washington, D.C. is at a thirty-year low."

"Donald Trump has no basis to take over the local police department. And zero credibility on the issue of law and order. Get lost," the New York lawmaker added.

National Republican Campaign Committee deputy executive director Jack Pandol responded by asking, "Why do Democrats always take up for thugs, violent criminals, and illegals over law abiding citizens?"

Pandol then laid out a number of recent headlines, including one from Sunday in which a juvenile was accused of shooting at people.

Trump: "We're going to take our capital back"

Breitbart reported that Trump revealed his takeover of law enforcement in Washington, D.C. while speaking to reporters at the White House on Monday.

"This is Liberation Day in D.C., and we’re going to take our capital back. We’re taking it back," the president was quoted as telling those in attendance.

"I understand a lot of you tend to be on the liberal side, but … you don’t want to get mugged and raped and shot and killed," he stressed.

"You want to be able to leave your apartment or your house where you live and feel safe and go into a store to buy a newspaper or buy something, and you don’t have that now," Trump pointed out.
