Home Depot co-founder Bernie Marcus said Tuesday that he would likely donate to former President Donald Trump's campaign despite any future conviction.

Marcus shared the comments in interview comments shared this week by Reuters.

The remarks

“I think so. Because I think it’s all trumped up," Marcus stated in response to questions about funding the former president's campaign.

“Of course I’m going to support him to some extent, but I’m not one of his big givers, that’s for sure,” Marcus told the outlet.

The background

"Trump faces four criminal cases, including state and federal charges stemming from his efforts to overturn his 2020 election loss to Democrat Joe Biden," the New York Post reported.

"Trump, 77, denies any wrongdoing and has pleaded not guilty in all four cases," it noted.

Calls for ending debates

"I urge my fellow Democrats, Republicans, and Independents to put their love for America above all else. I urge the Republican National Committee to end the Republican debates that only benefit ad makers and political consultants. They are unproductive and embarrassing," Marcus also wrote in an op-ed published by RealClearPolitics in early November.

Marcus wrote that he had hoped "it was time for me to move to the sidelines and let younger generations continue the fight to preserve America’s founding freedoms and values. But, like so many of us, I realized that I could not let myself walk away; the stakes are just too high."

Marcus has been a longtime supporter of Trump despite calls from some high-profile donors to switch to another candidate.

Early in the 2024 campaign, Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis and former South Carolina Gov. Nikki Haley have ranked among the top alternatives, but neither have been able to close the gap in polls nationally or in early primary states.

The situation appears headed toward a rematch between Trump and President Joe Biden next year, with Trump facing multiple legal cases and Biden facing a House impeachment inquiry ahead of the 2024 election.
