Former 'Home Improvement' star Zachary Ty Bryan arrested on domestic violence charge
In the 1990s, tens of millions of Americans fell in love with the fictional Taylor family in the hit sitcom Home Improvement, which featured comedian Tim Allen as a local TV star and the father of an average middle-class family in Michigan.
One of the younger stars of that show, Zachary Ty Bryan, who played Allen's eldest son Brad, was just arrested on domestic violence charges to start the new year, according to People magazine.
It is the latest in a string of arrests that coincide with legal and personal issues for Bryan over the past few years and which a concerned Allen addressed in an interview in 2023.
Series of arrests in recent years
TMZ reported on Friday that Bryan had been arrested in Myrtle Beach, South Carolina, on Jan. 1 and was charged with second-degree domestic violence after police responded to a call for a domestic issue and determined that Bryan had been involved in a physical altercation.
As of the publication of that report, Bryan remained in custody in the Horry County jail on a $10,000 bond, and the outlet noted that it was at least his third arrest in just a year and a half.
The former TV star had been arrested and charged in a domestic violence incident in July 2023 in Oregon and then had been busted in California in February 2024 with a felony driving under the influence charge.
People magazine noted that Bryan had also been arrested for DUI in Oklahoma in October 2024, and that he'd also been arrested and charged over a domestic dispute in Oregon in 2020, for which he was sentenced to three years of probation.
Following the 2023 domestic violence incident, Bryan had pleaded guilty to a set of reduced charges and was sentenced to a week in jail plus more probation.
A "great kid" who is now a "complex man" and "corrupted"
Amid Bryan's legal and personal troubles in 2023, before the domestic violence incident that year, The Hollywood Reporter published an in-depth look at the prior success and recent downfall of the child actor-turned-Hollywood producer, cryptocurrency investor, alleged scammer, and struggling alcoholic.
Former TV dad Tim Allen told THR of his former co-star and eldest TV son Bryan, "I don’t know what’s going on with him."
"Zach is a great kid who has grown into a complex man. All you can do is step aside and let somebody go through their process," he continued. "At a certain point, he deviated from the guy I know to somebody who is reacting to situations that I had nothing to do with and can’t control."
"I don’t know what happens when people get corrupted. You just don’t know," Allen said, and later added of his troubled friend, "I know Zach’s heart. He’s got to figure out his own way."
Details of latest arrest not yet known
The full details of Bryan's latest run-in with the law are not yet clear, including who he was involved in a physical dispute with or the context of that altercation.
It should be noted that both of his prior domestic violence incidents involved a woman named Johnny Faye Cartwright, whom he later engaged, married, and had children with, and both of them have previously downplayed those prior altercations as being blown out of proportion by police and the media.
