House Democrat steps down from leadership position after criticizing Biden
A CNN poll published last month found that nearly two-thirds of Democratic voters would prefer that someone other than President Joe Biden be their party's nominee next year.
Among those to express dissatisfaction is Minnesota Rep. Dean Phillips, a fact which led him to step down from his House leadership position.Â
Phillips discussed possibility of challenging Biden
According to the Washington Examiner, Phillips floated the possibility of launching a primary challenge against Biden during an interview with anti-Trump activist Steve Schmidt.
"I am thinking about it. I haven't ruled it out," Phillips told Schmidt regarding a possible presidential run, adding, "I'm concerned that there is no alternative."
Phillips subsequently provided a statement to Axios in which the Minnesota congressman announced that he would no longer be involved in House leadership.
Congressman says he "was not pressured or forced"
"My convictions relative to the 2024 presidential race are incongruent with the majority of my caucus, and I felt it appropriate to step aside from elected leadership," Phillips said.
"I celebrate Leader Jeffries for his remarkable and principled leadership, and extend gratitude to my outstanding friends and colleagues for having created space and place for my perspectives," he continued.
"I'll continue to abide by my convictions, place people over politics, and support our shared mission to deliver security, opportunity, and prosperity for all Americans. Onward!" Philips
Phillips later reiterated that same message in a series of tweets on Sunday, stressing that he "was not pressured or forced to resign."
Phillips was the first Democrat to demand Menendez's resignation
I have decided to step down from the DPCC & Democratic Caucus leadership. While politics & official work do not mix, it’s clear my convictions about 2024 are incongruent with the position of my colleagues & that was causing discomfort. I was not pressured or forced to resign. 1/2

Phillips went on to praise House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries as well as House Democratic Policy and Communications Committee (DPCC) chief Joe Neguse "for their authentic [and] principled leadership."
To the contrary, @RepJeffries has provided space & place for all perspectives, and I celebrate him and our DPCC Chair, @RepJoeNeguse for their authentic & principled leadership. I’ll continue to put people over politics, and ask our Congress and country join me. Onward! 🇺🇸 2/2

The Examiner noted how in addition to opposing Biden's reelection efforts, Phillips was also the first member of his party to call for New Jersey Democratic Sen. Bob Menendez's resignation after he was hit with bribery charges.
