House passes bill to end D.C.'s sanctuary city status

The U.S. House of Representatives just passed a bill that effectively stops Washington, D.C., from being a so-called sanctuary city jurisdiction.

Just the News reports that the lower chamber passed the measure on Thursday.

Sanctuary jurisdictions, of course, are those that look to provide shelter to illegal immigrants against federal law enforcement. President Donald Trump recently released a list identifying all sanctuary jurisdictions in the United States.

The details

The legislation that was passed by the House is called the District of Columbia Federal Immigrantion Compliance Act of 2025. It stems from an executive order that was signed by President Trump.

Just the News reports:

The bill, if passed in the GOP-led Senate and signed into law, would block D.C. policies that restrict it from sharing immigration status information with the Department of Homeland Security and prevent it from complying with Immigration and Customs Enforcement requests to detain people until ICE officers can take them into custody.

The measure actually made it through the House with bipartisan support.

The final tally was 224 to 194, with 11 Democrats joining their Republican counterparts.

The question now is whether it will get similar support in the U.S. Senate, and, at the time of this writing, the answer is unclear.

No more "thumbing its nose"

Rules Committee Chairwoman Virginia Foxx (R-NC), according to the Washington Examiner, released a statement following the passage of the legislation.

"The D.C. City Council has a history of thumbing its nose at federal agencies, such as Immigration and Customs Enforcement, that are responsible for protecting national security and the safety and well-being of the American people," she said.

Foxs added, "As the nation’s capital, the District of Columbia should set a serious example that harboring illegal aliens and obstructing the work of federal law enforcement is not an option."

House Speaker Mike Johnson (R-LA) also weighed in on the measure.

He said:

The inexcusable violence in Los Angeles is the latest example of what happens when cities put left-wing political agendas ahead of public safety. For years, D.C. leaders have followed the lead of sanctuary states like California and New York, choosing to shield illegal aliens from federal law instead of protecting American citizens.
