Newsweek reported this past Friday that Hunter Biden was indicted in a California federal court on nine tax-related charges.

Those charges allege that at various times, Biden failed to pay taxes owed, failed to file a tax return, and provided false information when a return was filed. He faces a total of 17 years in jail if convicted.

Hunter Biden hit with three felony charges and six misdemeanors

However, Newsweek also noted that a maximum sentence thus far appears unlikely and that the judge presiding over his will take sentencing guidelines into account should Biden be found guilty.

A press release put out by Special Counsel David C. Weiss's office explained that the president's son has been hit with three felony charges along with six misdemeanors.

"Hunter Biden engaged in a four-year scheme in which he chose not to pay at least $1.4 million in self-assessed federal taxes he owed for tax years 2016 through 2019 and to evade the assessment of taxes for tax year 2018 when he filed false returns," it alleged.

Biden funded "extravagant lifestyle" rather than pay his taxes

The press release also accused Biden of "subverted the payroll and tax withholding process of his own company by withdrawing millions outside of the payroll and tax withholding process."

Further, he is also said to have "spent millions of dollars on an extravagant lifestyle rather than paying his tax bills" over a period of years.

This included his having "willfully failed to pay his 2016, 2017, 2018 and 2019 taxes on time, despite having access to funds to pay some or all of these taxes."

What's more, the press release states that "when he did finally file his 2018 returns," Biden "included false business deductions in order to reduce the very substantial tax liability he faced as of February 2020."

Bank records show Joe Biden received payments from China-connected account

News of Hunter Biden's indictment came less than a week after House Oversight Committee Chairman James Comer revealed that a company he owned made "direct monthly payments to Joe Biden."

"This wasn’t a payment from Hunter Biden’s personal account but an account for his corporation that received payments from China and other shady corners of the world," the Kentucky Republican stated.

The payments, which were made on September 17, 2018, October 15, 2018, and November 15, 2018, amounted to a total of $1,380.00 per month.
