Hunter Biden's lawyer questions bizarre special counsel appointment

U.S. Attorney General Merrick Garland stunned the news cycle last week after he announced David Weiss as the special counsel in charge of the Hunter Biden investigation.

According to Breitbart, Hunter Biden's lawyer recently went on record saying there was no point in making Weiss a special counsel, as he already had all the power needed to bring charges against Hunter Biden as a U.S. Attorney.

The appointment of a special counsel on the case came in the wake of Hunter Biden's plea deal -- called a "sweetheart deal" by many -- falling apart at the hands of a judge earlier this month.

Many have laughed at the idea of Weiss as a special counsel on the case, and suggest that it only happened to give the illusion that Garland's DOJ was being fair.

Hunter's lawyer speaks

During a recent CNN interview, Abbe Lowell, Hunter Biden's lawyer in the matter, held nothing back as he expressed his concerns about Weiss as a special counsel on the case.

Lowell suggested that the only thing that has changed is Weiss' title.

"[W]hat happened today, as a practical matter, is not much different than what was the case yesterday or three weeks from before. The Attorney General and Mr. Weiss both have said for weeks, months, that he had all the authority he needed to bring any charge that was merited, at any time that was appropriate, in any place that made sense," Lowell said.

Lowell added, "And so, the power that a special counsel has is the power that he has had. So, from a practical point of view, nothing really changed. His title may change."

"First, his title became special counsel today. His powers were the same yesterday. So, what’s different? It doesn’t make any difference to us, given what we understood to be the case."

He continued, "Once again, people need to understand that the Attorney General and…Mr. Weiss have said for a long time that he had all the authority that he needed to bring any charge that was appropriate in any place. So, what does a special counsel do that he couldn’t do? The answer should be nothing different."

Extreme backlash

Social media erupted after the announcement that Weiss would be appointed special counsel for the case. Many top media pundits called foul on the move, suggesting Hunter Biden was being covered by President Joe Biden's DOJ.

Vivek Ramaswamy, a 2024 GOP presidential hopeful, weighed in on the appointment.
