It's especially dangerous out on the streets of Democrat-run cities like Chicago for law enforcement agents -- from local to state to federal.

According to ABC News, that was evidenced once again in a Chicago suburb when Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) officers conducted a traffic stop that quickly escalated, with one of the responding ICE officers being dragged by the suspect for a considerable time.

The ICE agent who was dragged by the suspect using his vehicle was ultimately killed by gunfire, as the ICE officer, in fear of his life, fired on the subject in an attempt to save his own life.

The Department of Homeland Security (DHS) identified the suspect as as Silverio Villegas-Gonzales, who reportedly dragged the ICE officer "a considerable distance."

What's going on?

DHS released a statement explaining what happened during the Friday traffic stop, saying the suspect "resisted and attempted to drive his vehicle into the arrest team."

An ICE spokesperson added, "Fearing for his life, the officer discharged his firearm and struck the subject."

The suspect and the ICE officer were "immediately" transported to local area hospitals for treatment of their serious injuries. Villegas-Gonzales was pronounced dead at a the hospital, according to the federal law enforcement agency.

DHS Assistant Secretary Tricia McLaughlin released a statement about the condition of the ICE officer, who suffered very serious injuries as a result of being dragged by the suspect's vehicle.

"We are praying for the speedy recovery of our law enforcement officer. He followed his training, used appropriate force, and properly enforced the law to protect the public and law enforcement," she said.

It was noted that Villegas-Gonzales "entered the country at an unknown date and time" and apparently has a known history of reckless driving incidents.
