Former President Donald Trump is facing 40 charges in the federal classified documents case brought forth by Special Counsel Jack Smith.

According to Newsweek, in the latest twist in the case, federal prosecutors announced that they believe two images of classified documents were found on Trump's valet, Walt Nauta.

Federal prosecutors will now reportedly call forth an expert in phone data to attempt to prove that Nauta shared one of the images in a text message, which if true, could bolster the prosecution's attempt to convince a jury that the documents were not secure.

It would also help prosecutors convince the jury that the documents were improperly stored.

What happened?

Nauta, who is still employed as Trump's valet, was accused along with a maintenance worker of improperly moving around and hiding classified documents.

Newsweek noted:

Nauta and Carlos De Oliveira, a Mar-a-Lago maintenance worker, are accused of moving boxes of sensitive materials around Trump's Florida home to prevent federal agents from finding them and conspiring to delete security footage that had been sought under a subpoena.

Both men, along with Trump, have pleaded not guilty to all of the federal charges they face. Nauta's lawyer was reportedly made aware of the alleged cell phone images of the classified documents several months ago.

"Since one of the phones contained two unique images with classification markings, the Government provided those images separately to defense counsel via classified discovery in October 2023, along with the related forensic report containing metadata relating to those two images," the filing stated.

Smith and federal prosecutors have attempted to convince the judge presiding over the case that Nauta has had ample time to refute the claims, but still hasn't. Nauta and his attorney have a different take.

Newsweek noted:

Nauta claims that he cannot be expected to identify or disclose experts because, according to his previous court filing, "the Special Counsel's Office has yet to provide forensic images of the devices for which it has proffered expert testimony."

Late-breaking bombshell

In an absolutely astonishing twist Tuesday, the classified documents trial, which was expected to begin later this month, was indefinitely delayed by U.S. District Judge Aileen Cannon according to NBC News.

The judge's order read:

“The Court ... determines that finalization of a trial date at this juncture—before resolution of the myriad and interconnected pre-trial and CIPA issues remaining and forthcoming—would be imprudent and inconsistent with the Court’s duty to fully and fairly consider the various pending pre-trial motions before the Court, critical CIPA issues, and additional pretrial and trial preparations necessary to present this case to a jury."

It continued:

“The Court therefore vacates the current May 20, 2024, trial date (and associated calendar call), to be reset by separate order following resolution of the matters before the Court, consistent with Defendants’ right to due process and the public’s interest in the fair and efficient administration of justice."

As one can only imagine, most of the mainstream media are in total freak-out mode over the news of the trial delay. It'll be interesting to see how hysterical they become in the coming days.
