Jack Smith cuts limited immunity deal with 'fake electors' as Jan. 6 probe continues

As Special Counsel Jack Smith continues his probe of former President Donald Trump's conduct in the aftermath of the 2020 election, word has emerged that he has reached an agreement with two of the so-called “fake Republican electors” to provide testimony before a grand jury, as The Hill reports, citing information from CNN.

In exchange for their testimony, the witnesses with reportedly be granted limited immunity in their cases.

Deal reached

According to the outlet, Smith is in the midst of an effort to obtain – in short order – evidence related to Trump's alleged attempts to overturn the results of the aforementioned presidential contest.

Though Smith is said to have offered at least two such individuals limited immunity, he also made it clear that their testimony must be provided in the immediate future, without any opportunity for delay.

CNN noted that Smith's team has been engaging with those who signed false certificates stating that they were rightful electors for the former president since last spring, but recently began taking a harder line with certain of them, declining extensions for subpoena responses and demanding their testimony right away.

It is thought that recent movement on this particular thread of the broader Jan. 6 probe being overseen by Smith is a strong signal that charges could be on the way in the near term.

Target unclear

As CNN noted, it is not certain whether Trump himself is a target of the fake electors facet of the wider probe, but prosecutors have reportedly focused in recent months on seeking information on various aspects of actions he took in late 2020.

Those efforts included the solicitation and securing of testimony from former Vice President Mike Pence.

Also of note, according to CNN, is the fact that the special counsel's office has evinced an uptick in interest regarding the conduct of several lawyers who assisted Trump in pursuing claims of election fraud, a group that includes Sidney Powell, Rudy Giuliani, and Jeffrey Clark.

Another possible realm of inquiry currently being explored by the special counsel's probe is whether Trump's post-election conduct involved financial crimes or money laundering in connection to the millions of dollars raised from those concerned about the integrity of the 2020 outcome.

Moving on “all fronts”

In the estimation of former federal prosecutor Glenn Kirschner, as Newsweek notes, all of the above developments make clear that Smith “continues to move forward on all fronts” when it comes to Trump.

During an episode of his Justice Matters podcast, Kirschner opined that Smith's deal with the fake electors represents a “tactical decision” to “lock in” testimony he feels will “incriminate Donald Trump” rather than spending time on going after “nobodies who committed crimes.”

When it comes to Smith's approach to the fake electors, Kirschner said the special counsel plans to “wring the truth out of them upfront, and he's going to use that truth to make sure he brings the best, most complete, most compelling case he can bring against Donald Trump and his legal team.”

Now if only someone with comparable authority to Smith's in the Justice Department would take a similarly intense interest in the conduct of Hunter Biden, Joe Biden, and the rest of the corrupt first family.
