Jack Smith is lawyering, with resignation expected
Special Counsel Jack Smith is lawyering up.
This comes, according to the Wall Street Journal, as Smith is about to resign from his position and as President-Elect Donald Trump is about to reenter the Oval Office.
Smith, of course, is the man whom the Biden administration chose to launch legal warfare on Trump in the hope of upending Trump's 2024 presidential campaign. This, however, is not how things turned out.
Instead, Smith ran into a number of legal roadblocks, and the biggest roadblock of all was Trump's resounding victory in the 2024 presidential election.
The latest
One of the big questions, as Trump makes his return to the White House, is whether the U.S. Department of Justice (DOJ) will launch investigations into the likes of Smith. As of this moment, we really do not know the answer to this question.
Smith, however, is preparing for the worst.
The Journal reports:
According to two sources with knowledge of the matter and a former Justice Department official, several attorneys and staffers who were on the special counsel’s Justice Department team, or had done work for its criminal investigations into Trump, have already sought legal counsel or retained personal lawyers — in case the former and now future president and his incoming administration follow through on his desire to probe or even prosecute his enemies.
The Journal goes on to detail some of the steps that Smith and others have done to prepare.
Per the outlet:
Some federal investigators, including more junior staff, have talked to attorneys and legal groups about possible ways a rejuvenated Trump Justice Department could try to make their lives hell, what precautionary measures they should take, and even how to avoid going bankrupt if the revenge probes come in full force, the sources add.
Looking forward
Following Trump's election victory, reports were released indicating that Smith plans to resign before Trump takes office and has the opportunity to fire him.
Fox News, at the time, reported:
Smith is aiming to bring to an end his cases against Trump and step down before the new president takes office as a way to get ahead of the Republican's promise to fire him "within two seconds." . . . Smith has been evaluating how to wind down both the 2020 election interference case and the separate classified documents case before Trump takes office, Fox News reported last week.
It remains to be seen how exactly this will all play out.
Trump, for his part, does not appear to be focused on the likes of Smith. He is going to hand such things off to his incoming attorney general, Pam Bondi.
Trump, instead, seems focused on getting America back on track.
