Special Counsel Jack Smith isn't having much in the way of luck with his classified documents case against former President Donald Trump. 

According to The Hill, Smith and his prosecutors are now asking for Judge Aileen Cannon to issue a gag order against the former president regarding previous statements he made about the search warrant for Mar-a-Lago that Smith claims could endanger law enforcement officers.

The request came in the wake of the news that on the documentation for the Mar-a-Lago raid, agents were authorized to use "deadly force."

Trump and his surrogates seized on the news, though multiple outlets reported that the same language, which the FBI calls standard, was also included in the search warrants for the raid on President Joe Biden's Delaware home.

Smith's request

In Smith's filing, he argued the gag order was warranted to prevent Trump from making statements that "pose a significant, imminent, and foreseeable danger to the law enforcement agents participating in the investigation and prosecution of this case."

Smith dialed in on the multiple social media posts by Trump announcing what the search warrant said.

"Whether a particular statement meets that test “must be determined by reference to the statement’s full context," Smith's filing stated.

It added, "But that condition would clearly prohibit further statements deceptively claiming that the agents involved in the execution of the search warrant were engaged in an effort to kill him, his family, or Secret Service agents."

Specifically, Smith targeted what Trump's campaign wrote in an email to supporters, in which the president claimed that federal agents were "locked & loaded" as they executed the raid on Mar-a-Lago.

Trump responds

The former president, who is no stranger to gag orders and definitely not a fan of them, slammed Smith and his prosecutors in a post Friday.

"Deranged Jack Smith has asked Judge Aileen Cannon in Florida for a Gag Order on me, so that I cannot talk about all of the Crimes he has committed, including the Illegal, Unconstitutional, and Unwarranted RAID of Mar-a-Lago. I guess they’re hoping they can silence me from telling the TRUTH like the Corrupt and Highly Conflicted Judge in New York City has done," he wrote.

Trump added, "Gag Orders have a very strong tendency to BACKFIRE, and if anybody should be GAGGED, it should be Deranged Jack, who was recently caught doing very bad things - and I should be able to talk about that, and everything else having to do with this Hoax - from which Crooked Joe Biden was FULLY EXONERATED!"

As of this writing, it's unclear if Judge Cannon is entertaining Smith's request. Only time will tell.
