Throughout his time in office former President Donald Trump was dogged by an investigation into alleged collusion with Russia along with two impeachment trials, all of which came to naught.

A report from this weekend suggests Trump is doomed to experience yet more harassment as Democrats use the legal system to target him.

Two criminal referrals expected to come on Monday

NPR reported on Saturday that House Select Jan. 6 Committee will take up criminal referrals against former President Donald Trump.

The first will ask the Justice Department to prosecute Trump for obstruction of an official proceeding of Congress while the second deals with conspiracy to defraud the United States.

The network cited "a source familiar with the committee's discussions but not authorized to speak publicly" about what actions will be taken.

NPR stated that a vote on whether to send the referrals will occur on Monday, and that the matter is almost certain to pass.

However, the broadcaster pointed out that the referrals are merely requests that "do not carry any legal weight or compel the Justice Department to act."

Former Trump advisor: "Everything they've tried to do has failed"

Former Trump administration advisor Sebastian Gorka argued in an interview with Newsmax on Saturday that the committee's referral would have no impact on Trump's presidential run.

Gorka suggested that Democrats "might be a little bit worried that the House is now going to be in Republican hands as of January."

"At the end of the day it doesn't matter, because they've been trying to destroy President Trump for six years and everything they've tried to do has failed," he declared.

For his part, Trump responded to news of the criminal referral by making a series of posts on his social media platform Truth Social.

"The Unselect Committee of political hacks are the same group that came up with the RUSSIA, RUSSIA, RUSSIA HOAX, not to mention many others. They are Corrupt cowards who hate our Country!!!" the former president asserted.

"Republicans and Patriots all over the land must stand strong and united against the Thugs and Scoundrels of the Unselect Committee," he continued, adding "It will be a dark period in American history, but with darkness comes light!!!"
