JD Vance calls upon Biden to resign
U.S. Sen. JD Vance is calling upon Joe Biden to resign from the U.S. presidency.
Vance did so via his X account over the weekend.
This comes not long after former President Donald Trump chose Vance to be his running mate at the recently-held Republican National Convention. Vance did accept the offer.
It also comes as Biden continues to face significant pressure to withdraw from the presidential race. Biden, at the time of this writing, is trying to fight off the pressure.
"RESIGN"
Vance issued his first message calling for Biden to resign on Saturday, July 20, 2024.
"Everyone calling on Joe Biden to *stop running* without also calling on him to resign the presidency is engaged in an absurd level of cynicism. If you can't run, you can't serve. He should resign now," Vance wrote.
Many agree that there is a certain logic to this statement. But, others do not agree, which prompted Vance to issue a second message calling for Biden to resign on Sunday, July 21, 2024.
"If Joe Biden ends his reelection campaign, how can he justify remaining President? Not running for reelection would be a clear admission that President Trump was right all along about Biden not being mentally fit enough to serve as Commander-in-Chief. There is no middle ground," Vance wrote.
Although Republicans generally seem to be in agreement about this, some were a bit surprised that Vance actually said it.
Here's why:
If you have been following Trump recently, then you probably are aware of the fact that Trump has been encouraging Biden to stay in the race for the presidency.
The reason why is clear: Trump, at this point, believes that, in a matchup with Biden, he is the clear favorite, whereas it is less clear how Trump will do against a potential Biden replacement. This, in large part, is because there is no indication as to who that replacement will be.
In the latest polls, Trump has indeed opened up a sizeable lead on Biden. One recent poll - from CBS News - even has Trump leading Biden by as many as 5 percentage points.
Polls, of course, always have to be taken with a gigantic grain of salt, but that is a sizeable lead given that these pollsters tend to underrepresent Republican voters in their polls.
It remains to be seen whether Biden will stay in the race or call it quits. There have been reports that he is on the verge of dropping out. But, Biden's campaign has contradicted those reports.
