Hollywood actress Jennifer Anniston recently said that former "Friends" co-star Matthew Perry "was happy" just before he passed away earlier this year.

Anniston's comments came during an interview this week with Variety magazine in which she recalled communicating with Perry on the same day that he died.

"He wasn’t struggling"

"He was happy. He was healthy. He had quit smoking. He was getting in shape. He was happy — that’s all I know," Anniston told the publication.

"I was literally texting with him that morning, funny Matty. He was not in pain. He wasn’t struggling. He was happy," the actress stressed.

"I want people to know he was really healthy, and getting healthy. He was on a pursuit. He worked so hard," Anniston recalled, adding, "He really was dealt a tough one. I miss him dearly. We all do. Boy, he made us laugh really hard."

Perry founded an organization to help others dealing with addiction

Variety noted that Perry had struggled for years with addiction before going on to found an organization to help others win their own battles.

The Matthew Perry Foundation's website says the organization is a reflection of "Matthew's enduring commitment to helping others struggling with the disease of addiction."

"It’s so beautiful," Aniston said of Perry's work, stating, "I hope he can know that he was loved in a way he never thought he was."

Fellow actress Reese Witherspoon was present for the interview as well, and she also shared fond memories of Aniston's friendship with Perry.

Reese Witherspoon: "Friends" stars had "beautiful" relationship

"You all were so close. It’s incredible what was born of those friendships, and how you guys have always taken care of each other for years and years," Witherspoon recalled.

"It’s really beautiful and set standards for our business, as well, with the way you respected each other," the star declared.

Witherspoon also recalled the two episodes of "Friends" that she appeared on, saying, "I feel lucky that I got to be on that show and I walked in like Alice in Wonderland, watching the most popular cast do this whole thing."

"I remember going home and going, oh, they’re in another league. They’re on another planet on comedy levels that I’ve never seen my entire life, pivoting on a dime and working on each other’s energy and it was extraordinary," Witherspoon said.
