Jim Jordan unveils contents of newly-obtained 'Facebook Files'
It took the threat of a contempt of Congress charge, but House Judiciary Committee Chairman Jim Jordan (R-OH) was finally able to procure internal emails from Meta, formerly known as Facebook, regarding a censorship campaign it ran on millions of Americans at the behest of the White House.
President Joe Biden's administration's involvement in censoring free speech on social media came to light in a big way earlier this year with the release of the "Twitter Files," and has been exposed once again for similar actions, this time with Facebook.
Internal documents revealed that Facebook executives routinely bowed to pressure from the Biden administration to scrub and demote certain posts related to controversial topics.
Jordan posted a lengthy Twitter thread revealing the contents of the obtained documents, and to say it's alarming is a massive understatement.
What did he reveal?
Jordan held nothing back in reporting to the public what his office discovered in the internal emails and documents.
"THE FACEBOOK FILES, PART 1: SMOKING-GUN DOCS PROVE FACEBOOK CENSORED AMERICANS BECAUSE OF BIDEN WHITE HOUSE PRESSURE," Jordan tweeted, beginning his long thread uncovering evidence of First Amendment suppression of millions of Americans.
Jordan added, "During the first half of 2021, social media companies like Facebook faced tremendous pressure from the Biden White House—both publicly and privately—to crack down on alleged “misinformation.'"
In perhaps one of the most egregious pieces of proof that Facebook was trampling Americans' free speech rights, Jordan posted a screenshot of a particular email that showed the White House's deep involvement.
In April 2021, a Facebook employee circulated an email for Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg and COO Sheryl Sandberg, writing: “We are facing continued pressure from external stakeholders, including the [Biden] White House” to remove posts. pic.twitter.com/iDRV3Kk2oO

Some of the emails showed how upset certain operatives in Biden's circle were on the occasions Facebook refused to remove certain posts.
Blatant disregard
Some Facebook executives, including Nick Clegg, Facebook’s president for global affairs, sounded the alarm on the company's willingness to often go along with the White House's recommendation in removing or censorsing content.
When Clegg “countered that removing content like that would represent a significant incursion into traditional boundaries of free expression in the US,”

Clearly, there were some people within the ranks of Facebook who understood how incredibly wrong it was to comply with the censorship requests.
Only time will tell if Jordan uncovers more damaging information for the already struggling social media company. It could take months and even years to get to the bottom of it all, sadly.
