Former President Jimmy Carter says that one of his final goals on this earth is to live long enough to vote for Vice President Kamala Harris in the upcoming election.

This is according to a new report from the Atlanta Journal-Consitution.

To help put things into context, the 99-year-old Carter has been in hospice care for some time now, having entered into it in February 2023. And, in order to vote for Harris, he will have to live past his 100th birthday, which will take place on Oct. 1, 2024.

Apparently, he is fighting to make this happen.

The details

The Atlanta Journal-Consitution, for its report, spoke with Carter's son Chip. It was Chip who told the outlet that his father wants to live long enough to vote for Harris.

"As former President Jimmy Carter nears his 100th birthday, his milestone celebration isn't on his mind. Defeating [former President] Donald Trump is," the outlet reports.

It goes on to quote Carter as telling Chip, "I'm only trying to make it to vote for Kamala Harris."

This came as Chip described to the outlet a recent conversation that he had with his father. Chip says that he asked Carter whether he was trying to make it to the century mark, and it was in response to this question that Carter made it clear that he is more interested in making it to the November election.

Chip further claimed, according to the  Atlanta Journal-Consitution, that Carter has been "more alert and interested in politics and the war in Gaza" in recent days.

Looking forward

According to Vanity Fair, Carter is planning on celebrating his birthday in September.

"In addition to voting, Carter plans to celebrate his birthday early in September with a music-filled night at the Fox Theatre in Atlanta," the outlet reports.

It adds, "Carter will be honored by a wide range of artists, including Chuck Leavell, D-Nice, Drive-By Truckers, Eric Church, GROUPLOVE, Maren Morris, and The Atlanta Symphony Orchestra Chamber Chorus."

Carter's grandson Jason Carter says that his grandfather really loves music. "Whether it was on his record players, on the campaign trail, or on the White House lawn music has been and continues to be a source of joy, comfort, and inspiration for my grandfather," Jason said.

Carter did endorse Joe Biden in the 2020 presidential election, and he is said to have continued to vote in national and local elections, including in Georgia's primary, which took place in May.
