Joe Biden having trouble attracting donors for presidential library

Typically, after a president leaves the White House, the next big thing to happen is the construction of a library to honor their legacy. Most presidents don't have much of a problem finding the number of donors to make it happen, and it requires a lot of money.

However, according to Fox News, former President Joe Biden is the first president in quite a while who seems to be having quite a bit of trouble attracting the donors necessary to complete construction his presidential library.

The library will reportedly require in the neighborhood of $200 to $300 million to build, and Biden just isn't getting the traction he thought he would get from his prior donors.

According to the donors who spoke to NBC News regarding the situation, they stated that while they have no animosity toward Joe Biden, they just aren't interested in donating to the library or will donate much less than they previously would have.

What's going on?

There were several interesting reasons as to why those donors have decided not to give to Biden like perhaps they would have before.

One of those reasons is that they reportedly fear being a target of the Trump administration, and many said they would rather save that money for the future of the Democratic Party.

Fox News noted:

Some of them said they had personal interactions with Biden’s inner circle that were so unpleasant they believed it would be difficult to ever raise significant funds for the former president.

"I’d like him to have some nice library," one donor told NBC News. "I just don’t see that’s where I’m going to spend my money."

The outlet reported that one of the former Biden donors was much more direct when asked if they were interested in donating to the library, saying, "No way."

Others were even more brutal, according to the outlet:

"I want an $800,000 refund," personal injury lawyer John Morgan told NBC News, referring to money he said he raised for Biden that went to Harris last year.

Library speaks up

Chairman of the library board, Rufus Gifford, not surprisingly, was optimistic about donors being willing to help complete the project.

"Those of us who have been around for a while and love the guy but also understand the full picture want to see what we can do to protect and promote his legacy," Gifford told NBC News. "This isn’t about the past. It’s about the future."

The Obama library cost a staggering $850 million to open, and if Biden is having trouble rasing less than half of that amount, it could pose quite a challenge.

Only time will tell if Biden and his people are able to raise enough to make the library a reality.
