The Iowa Supreme Court ruled Friday against the governor's effort to reinstate a six-week abortion ban.

The decision leaves the state's ban on abortions after 20 weeks in place instead of the stricter plan.

The decision

"In 2019, a district court blocked a law that would have barred most abortions in Iowa after a heartbeat is detected, but following the overturning of Roe v Wade in 2022, Republican Gov. Kim Reynolds petitioned the court to reinstate the law, according to the Associated Press," the Daily Caller wrote.

"The court, in a 3-3 ruling, failed to reach a majority on Reynold’s petition just days before the anniversary of the Dobbs v. Jackson Women’s Health Center decision, according to the opinion," it added.

Planned Parenthood celebrates

“Today’s order is an enormous win, and it means that Iowans will be able to control their bodies and their futures,” Ruth Richardson, the president and CEO of Planned Parenthood North Central States, said in a statement.

“Each person deserves control of their body, and Iowans have that right, based on today’s court decision," the statement added.

Vice President Kamala Harris also rejoiced over the legal ruling.

"Today, following the Iowa Supreme Court ruling, access to abortion in the state remains legal for now," she tweeted.

"Our Administration will continue to stand for the freedom of Iowans and all Americans to make decisions about their own bodies," she added.

The decision comes alongside many new laws over the past year since the Supreme Court decision that allowed states to make decisions related to abortion laws. Some states now have near-total abortion bans while others states have added abortion into their state constitution.

The court's decision will turn the pro-life effort to seek new options on further limiting abortion in Iowa while abortion advocates celebrate and seek to expand the win in other cases across the country.
