Judge refuses Trump's request to delay defamation case for mother-in-law's funeral

Fox News reported earlier this month that former President Donald Trump's mother-in-law passed away at the age of 78.

While that led Trump to ask the judge overseeing one of his legal cases for permission to attend her funeral, the request was shot down.

Trump slams judge as "crazy"

According to The Independent, Judge Lewis A Kaplan issued an order this past Friday denying Trump's request for a short delay in the trial.

Kaplan's courtroom has been the scene of arguments over how much Trump should have to pay author E. Jean Carroll. Carroll is seeking $10 million after having successfully sued Trump for defamation last year.

The former president reacted angrily to Kaplan's ruling and lashed out at the judge in a post on Truth Social, calling him "crazy" and "Trump hating." He wrote:

“Crazed, Trump hating Judge, Lewis Kaplan, who presided over the Election Interference Witch Hunt, disguised as a trial, of a woman I have never met before (celebrity photo line does not count - I had no idea who she was!), was asked if he could delay this Rigged Political Scam for one day so that I could attend the FUNERAL OF MY BELOVED MOTHER-IN-LAW WITH MY WIFE, THE FORMER (AND NEXT!) FIRST LADY OF THE UNITED STATES — AND HE SAID NO,” Mr Trump wrote.

The former president went on to add, "Can anyone imagine a husband not going to his wife’s mother’s funeral over a MADE UP STORY - A story that has been allowed to simmer by a really bad Judge who suffers from TRUMP DERANGEMENT SYNDROME!"

Judge overseeing Trump's civil fraud trial also refused to delay case

This is not the first time that Trump has mentioned his late mother-in-law to a judge, as he also did so last week with Judge Arthur Engoron.

Engoron, who is overseeing a civil fraud lawsuit filed by New York Attorney General Letitia James, refused to grant Trump's request for a brief pause.

For her part, Former First Lady Melania Trump addressed her mother's passing a post on X, the social media platform previously known as Twitter.

Mrs. Trump says mother was "entirely devoted" to her family

"It is with deep sadness that I announce the passing of my beloved mother, Amalija. Amalija Knavs was a strong woman who always carried herself with grace, warmth, and dignity," Trump wrote.

The former first lady went on to recall how her mother was "entirely devoted to her husband, daughters, grandson, and son-in-law."

"We will miss her beyond measure and continue to honor and love her legacy," Trump declared as she drew to a close.
