Justice Department fires more than a dozen members of Jack Smith's team
America's Justice Department is letting go of more than a dozen key officials who were part of Jack Smith's team prosecuting Donald Trump.
According to Fox News, Acting Attorney General James McHenry said they were fired because they couldn't be trusted in "faithfully implementing the president's agenda."
A Justice Department official indicated that McHenry sent a letter to each official notifying them of their termination.
Charges against Trump
The firings were the result of Donald Trump's promise to end the weaponization of the federal government. Jack Smith was appointed by former Attorney General Merrick Garland as special counsel back in November 2022.
Smith was a former assistant U.S. attorney and chief to the Department of Justice's public integrity section. He led the investigation into Donald Trump's retention of classified documents after leaving the White House in 2021.
Jack Smith and his team were also tasked with deciding whether or not the former president obstructed the federal government's investigation into the matter.
Additionally, Fox News indicates that Smith was "tasked with overseeing the investigation into whether Trump or other officials and entities interfered with the peaceful transfer of power following the 2020 presidential election, including the certification of the Electoral College vote on Jan. 6, 2021."
Donald Trump was charged in both cases but pleaded not guilty to both. Ultimately, both cases were dismissed.
The classified records case was dismissed in 2024 by U.S. District Court for the Southern District of Florida Judge Aileen Cannon, on the grounds that Smith was unlawfully appointed as special counsel. Jack Smith himself sought to have the 2020 election case dismissed after Donald Trump won the 2024 election, to which Judge Tanya Chutkan agreed.
Trump drains the swamp
One of Trump's promises on the campaign trail was that he was going to drain the swamp again and end the weaponization of the federal government. Trump saw first hand how damaging a politically-motivated witch hunt could be to a person both professionally and personally, and he doesn't want any federal liberals to be able to do that to people just for being a Republican ever again!
A Trump Justice Department official released a statement on the firing of more than a dozen Jack Smith officials:
"Today, Acting Attorney General James McHenry terminated the employment of a number of DOJ officials who played a significant role in prosecuting President Trump. In light of their actions, the Acting Attorney General does not trust these officials to assist in faithfully implementing the President’s agenda. This action is consistent with the mission of ending the weaponization of government."
Although the individual names of those let go have not been made public, the AP said that the termination targeted "career prosecutors who worked on special counsel Jack Smith’s team."
The firings are effective immediately.
