Kash Patel discusses new FBI building, plan to move 1,500 agents out of Washington
The FBI's J. Edgar Hoover Building has long been beset with problems, with pieces of concrete falling from its deteriorating exterior.
In response, FBI Director Kash Patel has recently announced that the agency's headquarters will be shut down.
Patel says current location "is unsafe for our workforce"
According to Fox Business, Patel discussed details of the situation when he spoke with "Sunday Morning Futures" host Maria Bartiromo earlier this week.
"This FBI is leaving the Hoover building because this building is unsafe for our workforce and we want," Patel said during the interview, which is set to air on Sunday.
He expressed a desire for "the American men and women to know, if you're going to come work at the premier law enforcement agency in the world, we're going to give you a building that's commensurate with that, and that's not this place."
CBS News reported in March that President Donald Trump rejected a 2023 U.S. General Services Administration (GSA) recommendation that a new FBI building be constructed in Greenbelt, Maryland.
"We're going to build another big FBI building right where it is, which would have been the right place because the FBI and the DOJ [Department of Justice] have to be near each other," Trump was quoted as saying.
FBI will move 1500 agents out of Washington
In addition to plans for a new headquarters, Patel also addressed his plan to move roughly 1,500 FBI agents outside of the nation's capital.
"Look, the FBI is 38,000 when we're fully manned, which we're not. In the national capital region, in the 50-mile radius around Washington, D.C., there were 11,000 FBI employees," Patel told Bartiromo.
"That's like a third of the workforce," he pointed out. "A third of the crime doesn't happen here, so we're taking 1,500 of those folks and moving them out."
"Every state's getting a plus-up, and I think when we do things like that, we inspire folks in America to become intel analysts and agents and say, 'we want to go work at the FBI because we want to go fight violent crime, and we want to get sent out into the country to do it,'" he added.
FBI communicating with Secret Service about Comey post
Patel drew attention earlier this week when he said that the FBI is in communication with the Secret Service concerning a social media post from former FBI Director James Comey which featured the numbers "86" and "47."
We are aware of the recent social media post by former FBI Director James Comey, directed at President Trump. We are in communication with the Secret Service and Director Curran. Primary jurisdiction is with SS on these matters and we, the FBI, will provide all necessary support.

Trump is America's 47th president, and the number 86 is sometimes used as a slang term for eliminating or killing someone.
