Former Dems Kennedy and Gabbard to campaign for Trump in Arizona on Saturday
Former President Donald Trump named Sen. JD Vance (R-OH) as his vice presidential nominee earlier in the summer but lately seems to have taken on another individual as a sort of co-running mate.
Robert F. Kennedy Jr., who suspended his independent presidential campaign last month and endorsed Trump, will be campaigning on the GOP nominee's behalf in Arizona on Saturday, according to the Arizona Republic.
Kennedy, a former lifelong Democrat disillusioned by the current party, will be joined by former Democratic Rep. Tulsi Gabbard (D-HI), who has also thrown her support behind the former Republican president who is seeking re-election to a second term.
Kennedy and Gabbard making an appearance
Billed as part of the "Team Trump Reclaim America Tour," Kennedy and Gabbard are set to appear at Arizona Christian University in Glendale on Saturday evening for a discussion moderated by blogger and social media influencer Jessica Reed Kraus.
Notably, it was also in Glendale that Kennedy had appeared on stage with former President Trump at a rally just hours after he announced that he had effectively suspended his campaign and was supporting Trump to win the election over the Democratic nominee, Vice President Kamala Harris.
Gabbard, who previously served in Congress as a Democrat and ran against both President Joe Biden and VP Harris in the 2020 Democratic primary, followed Kennedy's lead a few days later and similarly endorsed Trump over Harris.
RFK Jr.'s plans to support Trump
Kennedy hitting the campaign trail on behalf and in support of Trump in battleground states should come as no surprise, as he announced his intent to do exactly that in an interview last week, according to The Hill.
"We’re planning a Make America Healthy Again tour where we’re going to visit almost all of those states," he told NewsNation. "So I will be doing rallies in each of those states over the next 61 days."
"We want to, if we’re going to accomplish the mission that I set out to accomplish when I got into this campaign -- end the censorship, end surveillance, get out of Ukraine war, and unravel the war machine and the chronic disease epidemic -- the only way to do that is to get President Trump in the White House and me into Washington," he added. "So we’re going to pull out all the stops to make sure that happens."
Trump, Vance, other allies also doing events
Meanwhile, according to Newsweek, former President Trump will be busy Friday with a press conference event at one of his golf course near Los Angeles, California, followed by a campaign rally in Las Vegas, Nevada, in the evening.
Other Trump allies are also hitting the road in support of the former president, including entrepreneur Vivek Ramaswamy and attorney Alina Habba, who will headline a Team Trump Agenda 47 Policy Tour event in Farmington Hills, Michigan.
Trump's actual running mate, Sen. Vance, doesn't appear to have anything scheduled for this weekend, but the campaign did announce that he will deliver speeches next week in the critical swing states of Michigan on Tuesday and North Carolina on Wednesday.
Harris campaign busy as well
Of course, the Harris campaign is also making moves over the weekend, as Newsweek reported that the Democratic vice president will appear at multiple events in the crucial state of Pennsylvania on Friday while her running mate, Minnesota Gov. Tim Walz, will hit the swing states of Michigan and Wisconsin on Saturday, while second gentleman Doug Emhoff will appear at small campaign events in Mississippi and Florida.
The sharp focus of both campaigns on the handful of battleground states is unsurprising, given that RealClearPolling's averages show that Trump and Harris are essentially statistically tied within the margin of error in all of them, while Harris holds a modest 1.5-point lead nationally.
