Kentucky state Democrat switches parties
A state senator from Kentucky has decided to change her party affiliation from Democrat to Republican.
Fox News reports that Kentucky state Sen. Robin Webb made the decision just recently.
We are seeing more and more of this these days, and like so many former Democrats, Webb is claiming that she didn't leave the Democratic Party, but, rather, the Democratic Party left her.
🚨 Big news in KY! My friend, Sen. Robin Webb, switches from Dem to GOP. Pres. Trump’s leadership is strengthening our nation & growing our party. Love working w/ Robin on ag issues—thrilled to welcome her commonsense approach to the @KYGOP! Welcome, Robin!! pic.twitter.com/x7s69WGJxa

"The party left me"
The Republican Party of Kentucky recently published a press release on the matter, in which Webb explains her decision to jump ship.
She said:
While it’s cliché, it’s true: I didn’t leave the party — the party left me. The Kentucky Democratic Party has increasingly alienated lifelong rural Democrats like myself by failing to support the issues that matter most to rural Kentuckians. First and foremost, I’m a mother, a rancher, and a lawyer with deep personal and professional roots in Kentucky’s coal country. As the Democratic party continues its lurch to the left and its hyperfocus on policies that hurt workforce and economic development in my region, I no longer feel it represents my values.
Webb added that "It has become untenable and counterproductive to the best interests of my constituents for me to remain a Democrat."
The state senator went on to emphasize the fact that her political viewpoints have not really changed.
She said:
Those who know me best understand that my positions and the policies I champion haven’t changed. The only difference today is the letter next to my name. I will continue to be a fearless advocate for rural Kentucky and for the residents of eastern Kentucky who have been so good to me and my family. I want to thank President Stivers, my colleagues in the General Assembly, and the Republican Party of Kentucky for the warm welcome. I look forward to continuing to focus on sound policy with rural Kentucky’s best interests in mind.
Background
Webb has been in Kentucky politics for decades, after being elected to the state house back in 1998.
More recently, she has been a member of the state senate, but as a Democrat.
Fox explains that this is a big blow for Kentucky Democrats.
"This comes as a major blow to Kentucky Democrats, who have historically held a stronghold in rural regions of the state largely due to union workers and the coal industry," the outlet writes.
Kentucky Democrats, for their part, released a statement, saying, "She isn't a Democrat."
