That has resulted in a number of lawmakers throwing their hats in the ring, including one who has been endorsed by former House Speaker Kevin McCarthy.
According to Fox News, McCarthy voiced support on Sunday for Minnesota Republican Rep. Tom Emmer, saying, "He is the right person for the job."
"He can unite the conference. He understands the dynamics of the conference. He also understands what it takes to win and keep a majority," McCarthy added.
Those words came a day after Emmer declared his candidacy in a post on the social media platform formerly known as Twitter.
The American people elected us to deliver on a conservative agenda that secures our border, stops reckless spending, and holds Joe Biden accountable.
We cannot afford to fail them.

The Hill noted that Emmer is just one of nine Republican lawmakers who are currently pursuing campaigns for the House speakership.
The others are Oklahoma Rep. Kevin Hern, Michigan Rep. Jack Bergman, Florida Rep. Byron Donalds, Louisiana Rep. Mike Johnson, Pennsylvania Rep. Dan Meuser, Alabama Rep. Gary Palmer, Georgia Rep. Austin Scott, and Texas Rep. Pete Sessions.
Rep. Donalds declared his candidacy on Friday, saying, "My sole focus will be securing our border, funding our government responsibly, advancing a conservative vision for the House of Representatives and the American people, and expanding our Republican majority."

"Under my leadership, the House will lead the charge to advance a simple objective: put the American people first, keep them safe, and make their lives easier," he insisted.
Meanwhile, Fox News reported that Rep. Bergman touted his background as a general in the United States Marine Corps.
"I don't leave the battlefield in the middle of the fight, and I make sure that everybody on my left and right on that battlefield is coalesced as a team to win the fight," he stated.
"I believe with my 40 years of experience, the highest level of leadership in the Marine Corps, my civilian experience… my dedication over my life to service and our country – not this country, our country – is the kind of leadership that the conservative movement needs," Bergman added.
