Kilmar Abrego Garcia facing deportation to obscure African country
The Trump administration has just revealed the next destination of anti-Trump darling Kilmar Abrego Garcia, marking the latest twist in a months-long saga surrounding the "Maryland father" from El Salvador.
The administration informed Garcia in an e-mail to his lawyers Friday that he is facing removal to Eswatini, a small landlocked country in southern Africa formerly known as Swaziland.
Garcia's next destination
The twist comes after Garcia claimed he would face "persecution or torture" in 22 other nations, including Uganda, Mexico, Costa Rica, Guatemala, Panama, and Brazil.
This is not the first time Garcia has used dubious claims of "persecution" to avoid deportation.
Back in 2019, the illegal alien won an order from an immigration judge preventing his removal to El Salvador over fears of persecution by gangs. But he was denied asylum, exposing him to being deported anywhere else that would take him.
Garcia was widely portrayed as a "Maryland father" in the media after his March deportation back to his homeland. Democrats rallied to his defense, delighting Trump officials who shared police and court records indicating that Garcia has a gang affiliation and a history of domestic violence.
After months of pressure, the administration returned Garcia to the United States in June to face criminal charges for human smuggling.
A judge released him to Maryland pending trial, sparking a fresh immigration battle as Trump officials moved swiftly to deport him to a third country.
Persecuted by the world
Garcia's attorneys pushed back, claiming he would face persecution in Uganda and 21 other countries as they moved to reopen his six-year-old asylum case.
Immigration officials notified Garcia's lawyers Friday that he is facing removal to Eswatini, dismissing his fears of torture as frivolous.
"That claim of fear is hard to take seriously, especially given that you have claimed (through your attorneys) that you fear persecution or torture in at least 22 different countries," the email said.
Surprising nobody, Garcia's lawyers are now claiming Garcia faces "torture and persecution upon removal to Eswatini." Apparently, half the world is out to get this "Maryland father!"
If Garcia is successful in reopening his asylum case, Trump officials have already warned they will move to send him home to El Salvador.
"Kilmar Abrego Garcia’s lawyers are playing with fire,” the Department of Homeland Security said in a statement on Friday. It added: “As a member of a designated foreign terrorist organization, MS-13, he is no longer eligible for his previous immigration relief.”
