LA Mayor Karen Bass engages in standoff with ICE officials amid immigration enforcement push
President Donald Trump is pushing forward with his unprecedented immigration crackdown, spurring a high-profile confrontation this week in a major California city.
As the Washington Examiner reports, after a large caravan of federal law enforcement personnel made its way to MacArthur Park in Los Angeles on the order of the Trump administration, Democrat Mayor Karen Bass arrived on the scene to demand that the agents, including those from Immigration and Customs Enforcement, withdraw from the scene immediately.
Enforcement push triggers standoff
Federal officials made their heavy presence known in the park on Monday as part of planned raids to target pockets of illegal immigrants in the city.
It was not long before Bass was made aware of the situation, traveling to the scene to demand that the operation be immediately stopped.
Bass could be seen speaking to Assistant Chief Patrol Agent David Kim, whose cellular phone was used to contact Border Patrol Chief Gregory Bovino.
It was evidence that Bass was demanding a halt to the raids, asking Bovino, “What’s the time frame before they leave?”
Soon after, federal officials departed the scene, seemingly having made no arrests.
Bass takes defiant stance
The mayor left little doubt about her position on the planned raids and the increased presence of federal immigration enforcement officials in her city, saying upon her arrival at the park that the agents needed “to leave and they need to leave right now, they need to leave because this is unacceptable.”
Bass also took to X to offer her take on what occurred, stating, “Minutes before, there were more than 20 kids playing -- then, the MILITARY comes through.”
Clearly still outraged, Bass added, “The SECOND I heard about this, I went to the park to speak to the person in charge to tell them it needed to end NOW.”
She concluded her post by declaring the federal enforcement push “absolutely outrageous.”
Bass’ position appears to align with that of legions of anti-ICE protestors who, just last month, rioted in parts of her city, causing a reported $1 billion in losses stemming from vandalism and looting, while also threatening to commit violence against federal officials sent to the scene to help restore order.
Attacks, rhetoric escalate
As Fox News notes, ICE agents and other law enforcement officials are experiencing the fallout from the rhetoric coming from the left, with two agents targeted in ambushes over the last several days.
The White House, for its part, has taken aim at officials such as Bass for raising the temperature regarding immigration enforcement, with press secretary Karoline Leavitt stating Monday that the agents being assailed and attacked are “honorable Americans who are simply trying to do their job,” but whether that admonition will be heeded, only time will tell.
