Lara Trump drops out of consideration for Senate seat

Lara Trump is not joining the U.S. Senate after all.

After weeks of speculation about her political future, Donald Trump's daughter-in-law confirmed that she is dropping her effort to replace Sen. Marco Rubio, whom Donald nominated to serve as Secretary of State.

It's up to Florida governor Ron DeSantis to choose Rubio's successor. DeSantis' personal ambitions, and his history of clashing with Donald in the 2024 Republican primary, may have worked against Lara getting the job.

Lara Trump reversal

Despite the recent detente between DeSantis and President-elect Trump, the relationship between the two remains cool. DeSantis is also term-limited in 2026, so he has an interest in saving the Senate seat for himself.

Lara Trump - who lives in Florida with her husband Eric - wished DeSantis "best of luck" in making his appointment.

"I remain incredibly passionate about public service and look forward to serving our country again sometime in the future,” she continued.

Whoever gets the role would serve the remainder of Rubio's term until the next election in 2026. The Senate, where Rubio has served since 2011, is expected to readily confirm him to Trump's Cabinet.

Lara Trump recently resigned from her former position as co-chair at the RNC, where she helped secure President Trump's historic re-election victory. After publicly signaling interest in Rubio's job, she said she changed her mind upon further reflection.

“After an incredible amount of thought, contemplation, and encouragement from so many, I have decided to remove my name from consideration for the United States Senate," she wrote.

"Big announcement" ahead

Meanwhile, Lara Trump teased a "big announcement" coming in January but did not share details.

"I could not have been more honored to serve as RNC co-chair during the most high-stakes election of our lifetime and I’m truly humbled by the unbelievable support shown to me by the people of our country, and here in the great state of Florida. I have read so many of your kind messages and I cannot thank you enough.”

Last week, President-elect Trump anticipated that Lara would not get the position, even as he touted her qualifications and said she has many opportunities, including in media.

"I also know that Lara got so many other things. I mean she's got so many other things. People want her to be on television. They want to give her contracts," Trump said.

"She's got so many other things that she's talking about."
