A House Oversight Committee hearing took a personal turn this week, with Rep. James Comer (R-KY) referring to Rep. Jared Moskowitz (D-FL) as a "smurf."

The tense exchange occurred during a hearing over allegations related to President Joe Biden on Tuesday.

The exchange

"No, I'm not going to give you your time back," Comer said. "We can stop the clock, you all continue to, you look like a smurf here just going around and all this stuff."

"The two then began talking over each other with Moskowitz asking for his time back and Comer accusing him of spreading 'misinformation,'" Fox News reported.

Comer's words

“You retweeted that story, completely false. I’ve never loaned my brother one penny," Comer said in response to accusations against him.

"My father, who was a dentist, had some farmland. He died, and my brother couldn’t afford — he wanted to sell it, but he wanted to keep it in the family. So, I bought it from my brother. That story that you tweeted, also said I had a shell company. That is bulls**t," he continued.

Fighting at the Capitol?

"Comer launched his tirade the same day former House Speaker Kevin McCarthy (R-CA) shoved or hit a fellow House Republican and just hours after Sen. Markwayne Mullin (R-OK) threatened to fight a committee witness," HuffPost reported.

"It was an unusually tense day at the Capitol," it noted concerning the combination of events.

Moskowitz also poked fun at Comer later on Tuesday in a social media post. “Gargamel was very angry today,” he wrote, referring to the character from the Smurfs.

Comer has endured a series of personal attacks as he has served as the leader of the House Oversight Committee and pursued the investigation of Hunter Biden's business deals. The latest episode showed that the attacks are now spilling into the hearings themselves.

The hearings are expected to continue, with both Hunter Biden and James Biden under subpoena to testify in the near future as the investigation increases its pressure on the Biden administration ahead of the 2024 election.
