White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt said on Monday that she thinks President Donald Trump would be open to establishing a national holiday to honor slain conservative crusader Charlie Kirk.

“That’s an interesting question, I’m sure he wouldn’t oppose such a thing,” she told a reporter when asked about Trump support for such legislation.

Kirk died at age 31 after he was shot in the neck during an event at Utah Valley University on September 10.

Trump attended a huge memorial for Kirk in Arizona, where Kirk lived with his wife Erika and their two young children.

"Martyr for American freedom"

“I know I speak for everyone here today when I say that none of us will forget Charlie Kirk. And neither now will history,” the president said in his eulogy for Kirk, adding that he was a "martyr for American freedom."

Both houses of Congress approved a resolution to create a “National Day of Remembrance for Charlie Kirk” on Oct. 14, but that will presumably be a one-time occurrence.

In the past, Trump has complained about the number of national holidays (12), saying that having that many non-working days was bad for productivity.

"It is costing our Country $BILLIONS OF DOLLARS to keep all of these businesses closed,” he said on TruthSocial when Juneteenth was added in 2021.

That sentiment would seem to be at odds with adding yet another federal holiday to the calendar, but he may be so moved by the conservative icon's death that he will do it anyway.

Driving liberals crazy

Kirk died in the middle of a debate with a student about guns and the unusually high number of recent school shooters who have been transgender. He was shot by a 22-year-old man who was in a romantic relationship with a biological male in the process of transitioning to female.

He believed strongly in free speech and would admonish his audiences if they tried to shout down those who he debated.

It would be entirely appropriate to honor him in some way as a reminder to Americans that free speech is important and needs to be protected.

It would also drive liberals crazy since they took some of his comments as hateful toward minorities and the LGBT community (even though they were not).

It would also be good to have a reminder of what political violence can do in the country, and how people's actions can backfire and lead to outcomes they don't expect (like an explosion of Kirk's movement).
