Leftists angered after 11 Democrats vote for tougher penalties against foreign criminals
Last week saw the House of Representatives pass HR 3486, a piece of legislation known as the "Stop Illegal Entry Act of 2025."
What's more, some on the left were outraged after 11 Democratic lawmakers jumped ship and joined Democrats in supporting it.
ACLU: HR 3486 will "supercharge" Trump's deportation efforts
That's according to the left-wing website Common Dreams, which cited a statement released by Mike Zamore, who serves as national director of policy and government affairs at the American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU).
Zamore alleged that "HR 3486 would supercharge President Trump’s reckless deportation drive, which is already damaging our economy and destabilizing communities."
"This legislation would hand the Trump administration more tools to criminalize immigrants and terrorize communities at the same time they are deploying federal agents and the military to our streets," he alleged.
"It would also undermine public safety by diverting more resources away from youth services and prevention programs that actually improve community safety," Zamore declared.
"While the House narrowly passed this bill, we thank the members of Congress who held the line and voted against this harmful legislation," the activist went on to add.
Washington congresswoman says bill is "about scapegoating immigrants"
Common Dreams noted how that message was echoed by a number of Capitol Hill lawmakers, including Washington Democratic Rep. Pramila Jayapal.
Let’s be clear: H.R. 3486 isn’t about safety. It’s about scapegoating immigrants to distract from a cover-up of the rich and powerful. The American people deserve better. pic.twitter.com/pFW21BR5ru

"Let’s be clear: H.R. 3486 isn’t about safety," the congresswoman maintained in a social media post she put up late last week.
"It’s about scapegoating immigrants to distract from a cover-up of the rich and powerful. The American people deserve better," she asserted.
Bill imposes tougher penalties on foreign criminals, deported aliens who reenter
HR 3486 contains a number of provisions, with one imposing a prison sentence ranging between five years and life for an illegal alien convicted of a state or federal felony.
The bill also imposes extensive prison sentences for previously deported aliens who illegally reenter the United States depending on their circumstances.
The Democrats who supported it are Texas Rep. Henry Cuellar, North Carolina Rep. Don Davis, Maine Rep. Jared Golden, Texas Rep. Vicente Gonzalez, California Rep. Adam Gray, Michigan Rep. Kristen McDonald Rivet, Indiana Rep. Frank Mrvan, Washington Rep. Marie Gluesenkamp Perez, New York Rep. Tom Suozzi, D-N.Y., and New Mexico Rep. Gabe Vasquez.
