The University of North Carolina-Chapel Hill recently found itself in mourning over a coach whose career was marked by a set of double achievements.

According to the website Wral Sports Fan, former Tar Heels head coach Carl Torbush passed away last weekend at the age of 72.

Torbush oversaw back-to-back winning seasons

It noted that Torbush began coaching the Tar Heels in 1997, a season that saw the team rise to number six on the national ranking and finish with an 11-to-one record.

The following season was memorable as well, with the Tar Heels finishing seven to five and prevailing over San Diego State at the Las Vegas Bowl.

USA Today noted how in addition to his time spent at UNC-Chapel Hill, Torbrush later coached East Tennessee State's football team as well.

The paper quoted a statement from University President Brian Noland that read, "In Coach Torbush, we found not only a remarkable coach but also a man of unwavering integrity who embodied the spirit of ETSU."

Torbush's predecessor: "We lost a great man too soon"

Tributes to Torbrush quickly appeared online, including from Mack Brown, the coach Torbrush succeeded at UNC-Chapel Hill.

"We lost a great man too soon. Coach Torbush touched so many lives in a positive way," Brown wrote in a post on the social media platform previously known as Twitter.

"He loved the game of football, especially defense," the former football coach said of his successor. "He was the architect of one of college football’s greatest defenses during the ‘96 and ‘97 seasons here at Carolina."

Brown went on to conclude by writing, "We send our deepest condolences to Carl’s family and friends. He will be missed."

Coach remembered as "a great man"

The North Carolina Tar Heels' official account spoke up as well, stating, "It is with great sadness that we mourn the loss of Carl Torbush.'

"Coach Torbush was a great man and a heck of a football coach. The Carolina Football Family sends its condolences to Coach’s loved ones during this difficult time," it added.
