Letita James being investigated for real estate fraud
The FBI and U.S. Attorney's Office in Albany, New York, are investigating state Attorney General Letitia James's real estate and mortgage operations, according to law enforcement sources.
Newsweek has reached out to James' office, the FBI and the Department of Justice (DOJ) on Thursday morning for comment, as Breitbart News reported.
President Donald Trump and James have been in legal conflicts for years. The New York Attorney General is investigating the Trump Organization, which began during Trump's first administration.
What To Know
There are allegations that James, who is employed in New York state, falsely claimed a property in Virginia as her principal residence in 2023, according to the Federal Housing Finance Agency (FHFA). This has prompted an investigation by the FBI and the U.S. Attorney's Office.
William J. Pulte, director of the Federal Housing Finance Agency, claimed in April that James had lied about the number of units in her Brooklyn home in 2021 and that she had listed her father as her spouse on two separate occasions—in 1983 and 2000—when she bought a different property.
James has been accused of making false representations to a financial institution and of fraud involving wire, postal, and bank transactions; James refuted the allegations, describing them as "baseless."
James' History
Abbe Lowell, who is known to be a prominent criminal defense attorney, was appointed to represent her last month by James' office.
He came out of the gate strong, criticizing Trump for what he perceived as the hypocrisy of President Trump, who had earlier claimed that the Justice Department was being used against him.
Pushing back against Trump in both his capacities as president and resident of New York, the state attorney general has played a crucial role in the legal onslaught against Trump's policies and executive orders.
As the head of a group of Democratic state attorneys general, she is presently suing the Trump administration over their intentions to reduce funding for K-12 COVID-19-related efforts, in the amount of more than $1 billion.
From Top Figures
When asked about James in the Oval Office Tuesday, President Donald Trump didn't pull any punches, expressing his disdain:
"She's a disaster for New York. She's a horrible, horrible human being. And I think she's a total crook. There's no question about it. But that's just my opinion.
"Pam is going to have to do what she wants. She's a very bad person... she's a sick person."
Abbe Lowell said in a letter to U.S. Attorney General Pam Bondi last month that "The stunning hypocrisy of President Trump's complaint that the Justice Department had been 'politicized' and 'weaponized' against him is laid bare as he and others in his administration are now asking you to undertake the very same practice. This so-called 'criminal referral,' which recycles long-disproven allegations and is '(b)ased on media reports' lacks any credible foundation."
